Out it comes again
My name is not Marv, but I am feeling like it now. Looks like the head gaskets did not seal up. Just ordered new gaskets and I well spend the night getting it ready to come out. Suppose to be reaching in 2 weeks fire my b'day.

Re: Out it comes again
Cometics.. wish I knew why it did not seal. Heads were surfaced, needed .002 to square up. I sure hope I don't have a block issue. Will take the heads of some time tomorrow. 2 1/2 hours getting it out tonight by myself is a new record though.

Redoing a job because of a parts failure is the worst. Its enough to drive you nuts.

Re: Out it comes again
Are you sure it's the gaskets and not wicking up the studs? Don't know your bolt / stud configuration or if the LS has dry holes or not. Just a thought.
Also the Ra- surface on the heads is apparently a big deal with the Cometic gaskets. Cometic cites a minimum roughness of 50 Ra as I recall,, may be even rougher. If it's too slick the head doesn't 'bite into ' the gasket and the head moves around,, = eventual leaking. Just what we found in the small-block stuff,,, you mileage may vary.

Re: Out it comes again
Marv,
LS motors are dry holes. Only thing I can think is I did something a little different than my norm and it but me. It's just $250 and 8-10 hours.

Re: Out it comes again
You might want to spray some of that copper sealer spray they sell at the auto parts store between the gaskets if you aren't doing so already we've worked on several like that and they've worked gl on the fix.

Re: Out it comes again
That is actually what I did differently. Copper coat between each layer, set the head on and torqued down immediately. Not sure I will be trying it again this time.

Re: Out it comes again
Grrr..
Checked to make sure the block deck was square with a 24" snap on straight edge. Running the straight edge on a diagnal from top of 2 to bottom of 8, it is less than .002" out between the center of the bores (2 to 4 and 4 to 6) but nothing between the lifter to bore area. Front to back is dead on at the bottom of the block, at the bottom of the lifter boxes and at the top of the lifter boxes. It is the same situation with the drivers side but less than .003" between cyl's (1 to 3 and 3 to 5) Heads were dead on. Put it back together with new cometic gaskets, hooked the radiator up before installing it in the truck, filled the radiator and pressure tested it again. The water is weeping from the passenger side inner 3 studs (inside the rocker area between 2 to 4 and 4 to 6). I pulled those studs and blew the holes out, put thread sealer on the studs and screwed them back in and re-torqued the heads. Water is still weeping from those inner 3 studs, passenger side only. Keep in mind LS motors are supposed to be dry head stud bosses. I have that head off for my machine shop to look it over but I don't see anything wrong with the head. I am at a loss and could use some thoughts.

Re: Out it comes again
Bummer for me. Looks like I need to buy a new head as it is cracked between the stud bosses and water jacket.

Re: Out it comes again
Long story but I bought the heads used. Yes they are a 6 bolt head. I am sill unsure if it can be repaired, I am looking in to it. But if it is 75% the cost of a new one, well not sure what route I will take. These early castings haf a little bit of an issue so I am told.
Marv, I am not a paying member here so I can not post my for sale stuff. I have it locally on cl.

Re: Out it comes again
Ordered three new head which has a 4 week lead time.
I will need to bolt ot down, mark it, blend the entry to match the intake. It will then need a valve job and milked to current cc. Might have our running by the end of the year.

Re: Out it comes again
I know a few people that put siliconne around the studs and water passeges. Using copper coat is a good idea also. A dab of silicone on the stud thread helps also.

Re: Out it comes again
So Super,
What's going on? Its been quite some time since you last posted and I want to know how its all going together? Did you ever mount the turbo's and get that going? I know you had family stuff going on too so I suppose that's why you aren't here. I'm so close to driveline time I can't wait, until I pinched my finger today between a full gas tank and a cresent wrench that is.

Re: Out it comes again
Heck ya I forgot about this thread after the initial oh-noes from the teardown photo.
Where are we at with this rebuild Super? (and if you are dealing with some personal sh!t, the only thing I can say is we've all been there, but you know we're here to help ya one way or the other if we can).

Re: Out it comes again
Thanks guys for the thoughts.
Good news new cam #1 sounds awesome. I speced a 259/274 .680/.62x 109icl 113lsa, still hr roller I also have can #2 on the way from Brian Tooley.. I will be doing back to back dynoing soon. Bad news was the head, bought new one and local machine shop did me right. I am just needing to do new tie rod links with the MII spindles. Should be 3100lbs now but I suspect the 3.90 gear will slow me down n.a.. I am planning on making all the grudge races in sac this year.
