Re: Need help with steering column
pretty much any tilt without a key in the column will work. or you can buy a new column from any of the truck shops.

Re: Need help with steering column
the 67 will work that is what I used in my 65 but the holes for the two small screws will not line up. that's not a problem you will just need to drill two more small holes or you can use a hose clamp which is what I did. as far as the 87 gear I think the only difference is the rag joint clamp size, which again is not that big of a deal you will just need to acquire the right size and swap them out.

Re: Need help with steering column
I don't know about the auto gear shifter but I put in the collapsible shaft stuff from a 67 into the 66 column. My truck is 4sp manual. I also took the power steering so it was all pretty well bolt in. Ordered some plates from Internet land to mount the power steering box. I used a brass bushing from Classic industries for the lower bearing. It all works really well.
I guess with the 86 steering gear it might depend on length. I've read of people drilling out the plastic rivets in the double D shaft to change the length. You could also try Borgeson for steering shaft couplers etc. I'd like to do the 700R4 swap you are referring to. Thought I would look into a Lokar floor shifter. Keep us informed as to how it goes. |

Re: Need help with steering column
No. Just go under the column and remove the clutch pedal. Its actually pretty easy once you get under there and look at it. Did the same in my 63 short fleet when I converted it to an auto from the manual.

Re: Need help with steering column
So there's a pin made to the clutch pedal that runs through tube brake pedal is attached to. I assume I will need some sort of pin back in there right?

Re: Need help with steering column
No problem. Once you get under there you will see its easier than it looks. Don't let the diagram scare you off. I think it took about 1/2 hour from start to finish and it was the 1st once I had done.

Re: Need help with steering column
If you don't get a column that has the same gears as the trans it is hard to get the indicator and the shift notches to line up correctly. Some people tell me they have done it but it took a lot of tinkering others have told me it is a peace of cake. I have tried on mine and not been able to get it to sync up right.
