Side Step Fender Question

I'm new to the classic truck scene and I've been browsing for a couple weeks now and I've seen this on a few trucks and was wondering what was done to the fenders? I tried to search but didn't quite know what to put in for the search lol. Thanks in advance guys.

x2.

I don't see anything unusual with the fender itself.

Taillamps have been moved from the stock location, allowing you to see more of the fender.

Those are larger than the 67-72 fenders correct?

Have you seen 73 fenders swapped to 67-72 stepsides?

Re: Side Step Fender Question

You all realize that's an '81-'87 pickup, right?

They're different; I don't know about "larger".

Not that I recall. I'm kind of a fan of the GMT400 stepside box on a 67-72 but that (ie "generation swapping") is generally frowned upon around here.

Re: Side Step Fender Question

They are stock 73-87 stepside fenders with the marker light removed.

Agree. One minor correction - for those trucks that came with the square taillights - like my '80 and newer - there was no marker light in the fender. The side marker was part of the taillight itself.

Re: Side Step Fender Question

Not sure what the original poster was intending to do but since this area of the forum is dedicated to 67-72 GM trucks, I'll assume he is asking about putting these fenders on a 67-72. In my opinion running these fenders on a 67-72 looks pretty odd. Aside from the body lines being different the wheel wells are round on the 67-72 trucks and big and square on this body style. I've seen it done and it's certainly not my thang buy hey, to each his own... I guess

More pics of this beautiful truck

Re: Side Step Fender Question

The bedsides are different at the bottom where the steps bolt up, the steps are completely different, and yes, the fenders are physically "longer" (just look at the size of the 73-87 "step"). They may be a touch wider as well, but I'm not sure.

They look odd on a 67-72 truck. You'll have round front fender openings with a fat lip around them and these have a square opening with a narrow lip. The entire bed will fit, but to make just the fenders work on an actual 67-72 bed takes a good bit of work.

I also think GM could have done a little better with the 60-66 stepsides, as they kept the bed from the 55-59 trucks. The fenders matched the 55-59 trucks well but could have used a more squared off look to fit the 60-66 trucks better. At least the wheel wells matched well. I do like the 60-66 stepsides, I just always thought the fenders could have matched the truck a little better.

Agree - I hadn't noticed before but I'm starting to see more and more inconsistencies with GM styling trying to make the old bedsides fit newer and newer models. Lower step doesn't line up with the bottom of the cab; top of the bed side is in an odd place compared to the door belt line, etc. Whereas the fleetside boxes were "all new" along with the new cabs and so the design elements were more integrated.

The Design guys always get upset when engineers step on their toes but I think they dropped the ball a few times back then.

Re: Side Step Fender Question

That's nothing... remember when the Ford unibody was a failure and Ford sold the 62-63 trucks with the 1957-59 beds? My memory is fuzzy, but I think the 2wd trucks got the "right bed" quickly, but due to production demand the 4x4's got the "wrong bed" all the way to 63-64? My uncle's FIL owns one of these "wrong beds". He bought it in the 80's.

You HAD to have been a die hard ford nut to buy a brand new truck with a completely wrong looking bed on it.

They were a dang good looking truck once they got the right bed on them (last pic).

I'm not a Ford truck enthusiast, but I always thought something to be wrong with those trucks and could never pin-point exactly what it was. Thanks for sharing! Definitely learned something new today, and it's still a half hour before my classes start
