I really like the newer Chevy trucks, but wonder about the gas mileage...

The older 80s trucks got about 13 miles to the gallon. How about the newer fuelie trucks with the lock up torque converters? What kind of in town and highway mileage can you get with them?

I'm basically talking about a 1/2 ton, short bed 2x4, but interested in the 4x4 as well.

My stock 03 1500 X-cab 5.3L 4x4 Z71 3.73 diff ratio got 14 mpg in town, 18 on the highway and 16 on the interstate on average. If conditions were right it would get closer to 20 on the highway and 18 on the interstate.

That's not too shabby considering it's a 4x4. If I get a truck, I want to get something that won't kill me in gas bills ....

My 07 1500hd classic with 6.0 gets 10.6mpg in town. i have no idea what is gets on the highway, as i never resset the mpg calculator. I have to wonder if people are just constanty resetting them as they seem to get way better mpg then i do. My truck is a 2x4 also.

That is EXACTLY what people do, They reset it when on the freeway, Then brag about fuel economy.

Running them over 20,000 miles also gives false readings.

Looking for mileage in a GMT800 truck, Standard Cab Duramax trucks can knock down 24mpg on the Highway empty.

The 5.3l 1500 I had didn't have any fancy mileage calculators, so I had to do the math with every tank. In my neck of the woods in the winter time the gas stations can only sell ethanol fuel and I would see a 1 maybe 2 mpg drop for a few months on that fuel, but other than that the number I posted were as accurate as miles I drove divided by gallons of gas missing from the tank in that distance.

95% of my driving is 45mph and under "city" stop and go driving. 14mpg summer, about 13 winter (lots of warm up idles per tank, I'm only 8 miles from work.)

Gotten between 17.5-18.5 on 100% highway trips. I went back and forth from Greenville, SC to Athens, GA at least two weekends a year for 4 years, and take it NY one to two times per year at 1500 miles per round trip.

My wife used to own a 99 corolla. I put a lot of highway miles on it (rated at 25 city 33 highway) and it never got over 33. My wife also has a drive to work very similar to mine and averaged 26 mpg. I used to own a couple Toyotas and was on a forum or two for them, I've never seen so many people BS fuel mileage... People swore they were averaging 35 mpg, getting 39-40 on the highway...

Check out the 67-72 forum when people ask about mileage, you'll get a lot of people's numbers that make sense, but then you'll get one or two that swear they get 16-18mpg out of their 350/TH350/3.73 truck...

The only feature the GMT800s have is the hours meter that I know of.

LT Models had all the bells and whistle features in the dash read out. Trip A, Trip B, Work Odometer, Hours, Oil life, Fuel range, Avg MPG, Instant MPG and so on... I have found in my LT that the Avg MPG number is a real craps shoot, some times it is dead on and sometimes it is off as far as 2 MPG. Ya cant trust them...they will just break your heart when ya do.
