Pics of the last GM plant in Atlanta
This was the old GM plant in Doraville, Ga. It sits on 60 acres and was formerly called the B.O.P. plant as they assembled Buick, Olds, and Pontiacs there. The last products from this plant were the front wheel drive mini-vans. It was closed in 08 and has been on the market since then. The news says someone has made a deal on it and will start tearing it down soon, and will replace it with office space, retail, and housing. I don't think this concept has ever worked in the Atl area so I don't expect it to work this time either, other than to make bankruptcy lawyers rich.
The first pic is the front view of the office area. The silver building at the left of the second pic was the stamping plant. Porche was interested in it for a while but they chose another site near the airport. It was also mentioned as a site for the new Atlanta Falcons stadium but that didn't happen either. Look at Doraville, Ga on Google Earth to see a complete view to get an idea of how large the plant was. |

Re: Pics of the last GM plant in Atlanta
I used to drive right by there when I worked at Jim Ellis Chevy. Such a shame they couldn't make that place work, a lot of history there!
Another mixed use development is going to be such a waste... That isn't what works in atlanta and I can't believe anyone would throw money at it. The Porsche development in Hapeville (formerly a Ford Taurus plant) looks amazing, that will bring a lot of international exposure to the area. Too bad the Braves won't be a couple exits up anymore. I guess the only thing that stays the same is change. |

Thanks for posting that Russell, my Dad worked there for 30 years and retired back in 1984. He's now 86 and he has a lot of memories of that place.

Re: Pics of the last GM plant in Atlanta
I didn't mention before, but the plant sits on 165 acres near the intersection of I85 and I285, and reportedly sold for $60M. Mixed use developments have a history of failing in the Atlanta area and the company that bought it has a questionable background so I suspect that it will turn out to be a waste of prime real estate, at least for a long time. I wish Porche had got it but it's reported that they passed on it because of the politics of the county it is in.

Re: Pics of the last GM plant in Atlanta
My truck was built in Atlanta also but this is not the plant that made our trucks. They were built in another plant about 30 miles south of this location. It was called the GM Lakewood Assembly plant, or to us locals, the Chevy plant. They only built Chevys there. I posted a couple of pics of what's left of that plant a while back.
