Painting the running boards recommendation

All, what do you recommend using to get the running boards painted to as close to original as possible?

Thx

Pat

Re: Painting the running boards recommendation

I did not do my truck period correct but it is my daily driver. I just ordered a pair of these because painted running boards are very slippery when wet and scratches will show up eventually.

I like that idea.
Are the treads adhesive backed?

Re: Painting the running boards recommendation

I think originally they were a semi gloss black but even a lot of restorers paint them body color.

Even with step pads you might have a hard time keeping people's feet off the running boards at least on the part that doesn't have a step pad. Right after I painted the 48 in the early 80's I went more than one round with my dad because he couldn't get it in his head that I did not want his cowboy boots on my running boards when he was standing beside the truck.

Re: Painting the running boards recommendation

I spoke to a hot rodder last week that does high end builds. He said that if I put Rhino Liner in my pickup bed (and in the engine bay and on the running boards) I should tint it with the color that I plan on using for the truck exterior. The intent is not to match the paint, but to tie it in.

On a mildly related topic, do any of you have a means for filling in the pits on the running boards prior to coating them?

We just did this on a truck. The color match was very good in the bed and the running boards look good as well

Last build and the current one will have painted to match...once dry I use 3m clear bra tape. Can't see it and 10000 miles on the truck looks good as new

I use to own a spray in bedliner shop about 15 years ago and here is what I would recommend. if you are going to use a bedliner material use a system that is "hot spray" system (LineX, Bullet Liner) don't use a Rhino liner "Cold Spray". The hot spray systems bond instantly to surfaces while the cold systems have to dry about 10 mins which will run or drip on vertical surfaces.

As for the color match they can really get very close.

Re: Painting the running boards recommendation

Here is the inside of the bed. running boards have the same texture. its a one stage urethane bed liner from Sherwin Williams. Its actually a better match than the picture. Flash seems to make this paint look whiteish

Would you happen to have the S W product number ? Locals here only deal with house paint......

Did you wife notice it was missing or .... ? NAPA has a Herculine roll on product. Have not used it, but am planning to. I don't like the idea of buying separate gun for one application or getting the over spray all over my stuff. I did work on a former bed liner company space and the stuff was everywhere inside the shop. Probably more to do with the hired help and crappy booth system (not osha approved or inspected) that got ripped out.

For the pitting you can use POR-15 system or similar, but it does have a relatively small window for top coating with other paint or coatings if its going to be exposed to UV. It is designed to be self leveling.

Don't know this is second hand information. I do know it was sprayed on other than that I don't know about reducers of thinning or what type of spray gun

Re: Painting the running boards recommendation

"These are the "Real Deal". They are the ones provided by Chevrolet and GMC truck dealers for the 1947 through 1955 years. Their rough surface was to help prevent a person with wet shoes from sliding on the metal boards. No doubt careless people often broke limbs sliding on a slick wet running boards! Sold pair. Made in USA!"
Just installed these this week. Very good fit. There are six threaded studs welded on the bottom and they provide the nuts and washers. I put a bead of silicone caulk around the bottom to keep water from getting underneath. They work great. There's a link above in my first post to the website. Here's a pic.
