Which transmission

Good morning,

Well I have come to the conclusion that is time to pull the I6 and 3 speed and replace with sbc and automatic. I just got the motor built, should be close to 370 Hp, just a weekend cruiser. What would you guys recommend for the transmission? I found a donor truck about a year ago, that I got the steering column, linkages, crossmember, and peddles out of. Thanks in advance.

If you're going to just cruise and enjoy then an overdrive trans is probably what you want. TH350s are fun around town and backroads but they get annoying on the highway. I've been looking at Bowtie Overdrives' website. They have some performance oriented stuff at not too bad of a price.

Your needs will really dictate what kind of tranny you get. Rear end gears can help compensate for the lack of OD in a 350 or 400, but then you will have a truck that isn't too keen pulling from a stop light. Really decide what you prefer your truck to accomplish, then your transmission choice will make a lot more sense.

I agree with leftybass. I forgot to mention rear end ratios.

It's all about application: You want a beast from red light to red light, or do you want top end performance?

The truck has 3:73 gears right now. Plan on keeping them, that a pretty nice all around gear.

I have a similar setup in the 67 4wd. Leaning toward a 700R4.

Weekend cruiser- 700r4, 2004r, 4l60e: all overdrive transmissions that would function great with 373's.

the 2004r in non lockup form is not electric , the 700 4r can allso be built this way , 4l60 is electric , with any of them you are going to have to cut the driveshaft . if you have the trany I suspect you do in the truck now , you will be needing a crossmember allso , 2004r will be the easiest of the bunch to install

The 700R4 non electronic version is exactly what you need, you can buy a kit that has everything you need to make it work right.
The only thing you need a transmission shop to do is set the Throttle Valve cable properly.
If you want to buy a auto column you can buy them in good condition here on the board super cheap.

A newer 700R4 would be a good choice. Let's you keep your 3.73 rear and stay right around 2000 rpm at 70 mph. If you use a final drive ratio calculator you can see what happens with tire sixze etc.

So nice to hear someone not leave out the lonely 2004R, one of my favorites due to it's T-350 length and middle of the road 1st-2nd gear ratios and slightly longer OD as well. Amount of mods to make strong comparable to the 700R4.
