drop in electric fan that wont break the bank ?
so my truck has a 400sbc with dart iron eagle heads and a few other goodies, and the previous owner for some reason put a direct drive nylon fan onto the motor, well being here in florida it can get warm some days, and when I took it for a drive recently it would fluctuate between 160 and 180 depending on if I was driving or sitting in traffic.
what I would like to do is buy a drop in setup that doesn't require cutting here and screwing there (yeah ive read on the Taurus and Lincoln fans that people use here), but all the ones im seeing are in the 400 and up range, 800-900 if its a Be Cool radiator and fan combo. I know it will require an external fan harness for power and that's ok. the few questions I have are, is it better to go with one big fan or two small fans. if I only need one does it need to cover the whole size of the radiator or just a fan that matches the current nylon direct drive fan diameter. and does it require a shroud as removing the mechanical fan shroud would give a lot more room in the engine compartment. |

I would go with a good clutch fan/shroud combo. They still move the most air. 160 and 180? What thermostat do you have and where is your temp sensor? Those temps are below normal operating temps already.

Unsure on thermostat since I didn't build the motor , but it's never went over 180 even idling for 30 minutes , assuming since a high performance motor he put in a 180 for safety. And the sensor is at the front of the block on oassenger side of intake manifold, goes to a gauge on the inside next to the mechanical oil pressure gauge
My personal preference is to skip a mechanical fan and clutch all together for power reasons and aesthetic reasons. |

Power is the reason I would recommend a clutch fan. I thought the central Florida reference meant you were looking for the best cooling. 180 is not a safety factor. If you want looks over function I will have to pass. Good luck!

I'm a clutch fan guy too, but, if I went electric, I'd give the Jeep fan mod a hard look. Here is one link. Google the forum for "jeep fan" for many others.

I used and Old Air dual electric fan setup on my truck. It was designed to drop right and bolt up with no drilling/modifications.

Hello I thought there was something on this site about a Jeep fan that fit into the shroud of our trucks. It looked nice, but I don't know how to find it.

Dual fans on my stock 71 radiator with LS 6.0 motor.You may can find them cheaper.

I'm not running a stock radiator but dual fans off of fbodies are dirt cheap and that what I'm running only requires a relay kit unless you know how to wire your own relays. That's what I did it's super easy. Any way you go you want the shroud to be the same size as the radiator. For example two fans with a shroud two small will be less effective than a single with a correct shroud. If you don't make the shroud cover the whole radiator you will have hot spots on the edges. Not good. Also e fans let the enging make more power and look cooler in my opinion.

If you are changing fans for the look, or to free up some drag on the motor I can understand, but your motor is running between 160-180. That's cool all day long no matter what bolt ons you have.

I did a set of DeRale fans from Jegs. They are dual fans with 2 separate adjustable thermostats. This way they come on with the t-stat or when the AC is turned on. They move something like 4000 CFM, and I've sat in 95 degrees idling in traffic with the air on with no issues.
I had to make a minor trim to the plastic fan body to fit the stock 4-core radiator I'm running. They attach with plastic zip ties that go through the radiator, very simple. If you look through my build thread there are pics from when I put them in. Truck had a flex fan on it when I got it and an aftermarket radiator with no shroud. Plus my engine sits back in the L-6 position. I wanted the AC to work right and I wasn't interested in scrounging parts to make stuff fit, so I bough the fans from Jegs.
