1968 c10 yellow

Hy to all I am looking at purchasing a 1968 c10. I am 17 and will use as a Dailey driver so I need to know avg gas mpg. And will it pull/haul? It has a a 250 I6 and a 3 on the tree. 2 barrel rockchester carb. Very light surface rust. only penetrating rust is the rocker panels. All original she wants 1200 cash.

Re: 1968 c10 yellow

Sounds like a good price but you will be lucky to get 10 mpg but it will be fun. My 74 stepper has the 250 and 3 on the tree and has plenty of torgue but the mileage aint great.

Re: 1968 c10 yellow

Funnily enough, a bb will get almost the same as the i6s, at first I was gonna build mine as a daily driver but I took a different turn and am now goin with a damn nice truck that I'm not afraid to drive 1k miles in. Ls, od trans, 3.73 posi etc. And buying a 91-96 b body as my daily driver. May wanna think about doin the same.

The rear gears are usually lower with the inlines. I put an S-10 5 speed overdrive trans in my '67 with the 250 and it works great. It improved the mileage but I don't know how much...

Re: 1968 c10 yellow

My truck has ugly yellow (mustard) paint but it's had that color since 1972 so I'm not going to change it.

My truck gets terrible gas mileage: 10 mpg? It is a 250 I6 with 3 speed on column and 4.11 gears.

I might eventually change it over to a 3.73 gear ratio.

If you like the truck and you have $1200 dollars, buy it. If I find another panel truck, 1967 to 1970, and I can afford it, I'm buying it.

My ugly paint.

Re: 1968 c10 yellow

I use Valvoline oil and Fram oil filters. I do not know how many quarts of oil mine takes....I've never done any maintenance on it since I parked it once I got it. (Which is why I am working on it, it was parked far too long).

Re: 1968 c10 yellow

A 3.73 gear set and an overdrive trans (like the Mopar A833) might pick up the mileage a bit.

Or - a 3.42 without the overdrive.

Are you doing a lot of highway driving, a lot of city driving, or a mix?

Yes, it will probably hit 75 even if the engine is tired....mine will barely get there.....but it is about all it has in it to stay going that fast. Mine literally pumps oil out the breather when I do it because it is SO worn out. Mine is a '68, 6 cyl, 3 on the tree, 3.73 rear. I've never checked the fuel mileage.....I go by oil mileage in mine. (yours may not be as worn out as mine is)

A standard oil filter will work. No problem. I'm thinkin' mine takes 5 quarts with the filter.

Check your local auto parts store and you'll be able to find a small chrome air filter that works on the cheap........if you want one more original, that will take some hunting on th classified board or at a local salvage yard.

Keep in mind that it undoubtedly has manual drum brakes on all 4 corners.....stopping won't be as easy as it is new cars.

Bottom line......from what you've described so far, if it runs and drives, I'd buy it.

Re: 1968 c10 yellow

I will be doing a mix of driving. 25 mi to work 25 back home. I work 3 days a week. Until summer. I live in the back woods. If I want to go anywhere then it takes 30 min to get to paved road. I know it has sucky brakes.. My 3/4 ton has em to. But I want to leave it all stock. I will NOT put a wrentch to it unless I have to. I will do basic service and tune ups but that is it. Well not true. I will run a true strate Exost with a cherry bomb glass pack and put in new rockers then I am done. I will take a hot battery 1 gallon of gas and some starter fluid and see if I can start it. Has not ben drove or started in a year. This truck means slot to me. It belonged to my best friend until he was hit by a truck and killed last year. He was jogging at 6am and a sundaes didn't have headlights and hit him. I will do a tune up and fill the tires with air and that is all. If I purchase it.

In The Ten Ring that color isn't ugly and it's not yellow or mustard, that is Ochre. I looked a long time to find one in just that color. I guess it's all a matter of opinion.
