Fender Mount Spare Tire

Just found this fender mount spare tire at Fall Carlisle swap meet. It appears to be NOS with some rust around the edges. Not sure but looks like it was made for mid 70s to 1980 truck? Keith may know more about what years had this as an option. Thought it was interesting so bought it.

Another photo. Can get more different photos if interested. The person who had it, said he had it for a very long time, could not remember much about when, where it came from.

Re: Fender Mount Spare Tire

The 73-87 step sides came with two variations for the box. None spare tire and spare tire.

The spare tire style was an odd option not found on many trucks and some people hated them and others loved them.

Re: Fender Mount Spare Tire

Stepside side mount spare was available '73 - '80.

Side mount was available as RPO P13 for both the stepside and fleetside; for the stepper it mounted on the fender and for the fleetside it was mounted inside the box (my '87 was ordered with RPO P13).

By '81 it was done. Attached is the option description from the GM Heritage Center archive for 1981, showing that at that point P13 was for fleetside only (true for '81 and beyond).

Wow. I'm not a fan. That scalloped edge being exposed looks awful. They could have at least put the closeout on top of the fender (so that the edge would be uniform) or had a plastic liner or something to dress it out. It was certainly a different era back then.

No drain holes? When it is in the installed position does it look like it would shed water or is water going to lay in the bottom?

Re: Fender Mount Spare Tire

The spare would hide most of that ugly edge,But i think it would hold water with out a dain hole in it.
