Re: Post all your Car Audio needs
Sounds like you are the guy to ask. =-)
I got a "new" '81 GMC with an Alpine 7163 (and matching amp circa early 80's. Aparently it was also the factory radio in some 83/4/5 Lambo's) Sounds reasonably good, good enough that I'm not putting my two shaft denon in its place. But it naturally comes with early 80's alpine quirks; Primarily: how do you set the station presets? Seems no matter what combination of button presses, knob push or pulls I do, keys I hold down in combination, anytime I even touch a preset it changes to whatever the default preset is (ie: newer radios, you just hold the preset down and it will set your current station to the preset. This thing, the moment you touch the preset button it changes to the preset default). I've also been playing around with trying to set the clock... But that seems to have solved itself, I am guessing it gets a time signal off the air to set the clock automatically as I went to try and set the clock yesterday and found it was actually correct. Alpine site stinks for tech support, seems anything pre-CD days does not exist for them anymore. Even "vintage" parts comes back with a 'not found'. I guess vintage to them is 2005... Alex. Re: Post all your Car Audio needs
Wow Alex you are trying to tax my old memory! It has been a really long time since I have seen one of those. I am a member of several vintage car audio sites on FB. You may want to send me a friend request and reach out to the guys on those groups. Do you have the Face Plate? What do the other buttons say on the radio?

Re: Post all your Car Audio needs
My nephew came up with a great idea to play some tunes off our iphone by just hooking up an amp with an aux input then the speakers. It works great
So what's the least expensive amp to meet my needs? I'm thinking 4 channels as I have holes in my doors already and I want to put some 6x9s under the seat I'm not a audio snob so nothing fancy plan on a retro sound down the line |

Faceplate should be readable in the attached photo. And no, if I press volume and hold it, and push a preset at the same time, it does the same as originally mentioned (just jumping to the defualt for that preset). I forget what pushing the volume by itself ends up doing, but it changes the display so I assume the switch is okay. Basically, all the knobs and buttons provide a reaction from the unit, but nothing yet has allowed me to set my own presets. (the cassette was parked along with the truck, so I even get a genuine vintage cassette =-) ). I don't facebook, so that option is out. Wiring I'm good for. Just setting the pesky presets is all thats got me confounded. Alex. |

DjRacer
Im wanting to move to using an ipad air as a head unit. im thinking of buying Istreamer but not sure what else to i need. i have a 4 channel and a jl500/1 thinking of running 6x9 on the side corners and 6.5 on the kick panels. i heard i might need a linedriver. So.. what is the best line driver for my buck. and could i use an EQ instead of a linedriver. Last edited by Sick5; 10-22-2014 at 03:59 PM. |

Re: Post all your Car Audio needs
What would be my options on a set of 4x10 and 6.5 speakers? I will also need a 10" sub w/box and sub amp.

Re: Post all your Car Audio needs
I took the tank out of my 65 and those cab corners should be a good place to high mount a pair of new 6x9's I had left over from another project. I undercoated the whole inside of the cab then I bought a new cap and seal for the gas filler and will be using the 3M Windo Weld to mount it permanently. If I fill the cavity with Polyfill stuffing will my sound quality improve?
I plan to use a shallow mount 8" sub I have and I'm wondering if there would be any issues having an amp and remote controlled head unit mounted closely together with the sub? I was planning to mount the head unit on a fold down ramp to access it if needed otherwise it would be hidden. Should I add a couple small fans behind it to keep it cool? How is the sound quality of speakers mounted under the dash firing downward, I'm trying to keep things as less obstructed as possible.

Re: Post all your Car Audio needs
Guys I am sorry I am so late responding to these questions. I have folks that are supposed to be letting me know when I have questions on here. Nitis I can get you a very decent 4 channel amp for 125 plus shipping. I also have a barely used pioneer amp that will run 4 speakers for 100 plus the ride. Some 6.5 speakers fit in a 5-5.25 inch hole.

Re: Post all your Car Audio needs
Vidman I have been a Rockford fan then not a few times through my carrier. I am back to not being a fan again. I have had a few amp problems as of late even with their t series amps. If you do a 4 channel you can vary the power going to the speakers. You can even xover the smaller speakers to cut a little bass out of them. I would buy an amp with variable xovers.

Re: Post all your Car Audio needs
Sick 5 I would hook the amps up as they are first and see if you have a need for a line driver. A preamp with a knob for volume would be nice.

Re: Post all your Car Audio needs
Bigdan does the 65 have a center dash location? If so I would do fronts there or in the kick panels. It shouldn't be an issue to mount the head and amp close to the sub. Cal me if you have and questions I can help with. 334657558three

Re: Post all your Car Audio needs
Hello,
I'm fixing to swap out my seats in my 71 truck. I have a box built behind the seat with 2 amps with one 4 channel amp running 2 tens bridged. The other amp has 2 three ways and 2 mids hooked to it. I then have 2 tweeters hooked to the radio. I would like to get one amp for everything if that's possible? What would you recommend to buy?

Re: Post all your Car Audio needs
hi kevin,
thanks for all your advice. i will definitely keep you in mind for future purchases. as of now, i just have a quick question. i installed a new pioneer head unit- kept previous owner's door speakers and replaced po's 6x9's in rear with new ones. everything was working fine until i wired rear speakers up using posi connectors behind my brackets yesterday. the previous owner had his 6x9's in a box with the wires running to red and black on box. now there is no audio from any of the speakers. so i took out the back speakers to see if i could get audio from just the front (as this configuration worked fine until yesterday) and NOTHING! no sound from any speakers whatsoever. nothing has changed on wiring from head unit. any ideas? thanks! |

Re: Post all your Car Audio needs
andy4639 I would do a 5 channel if you want to run everything with one amp. Polk audio and image dynamics have some nice 5 channels.

Re: Post all your Car Audio needs
Kevin, I am kinda stumped over what to do a for a sound system in my 65. I purchased a www.radiosforoldcars.com 65 radio with a iPhone input and four outputs for speakers. I want to run 4 speakers and a small woofer but, I want to keep it all hidden as much as possible. What would you do? What band stuff? Thanks
