1972 chevy build/?'s
I just picked up my great uncles 72 chevy c10 lwb after his passing. It was left to me. My uncle bought this truck new in 71. Garage kept and hardly any rust. Runs but could use some tlc. So I'm super happy to have this one owner family heirloom! Now first question, is the stock engine a 350? Small block? I looked tonight but never could find the engine block code as it's covered in grease and it was getting dark.

Pop open the glovebox door, look for a sticker affixed to it. It is called a SPID (service parts id) that will have a lot of info on it.

From your discription, it appears to be the original motor. It really doesn't gain you anything. Other than oil stains on your garage floor.

Hi Wallee, I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I'm sure if you post some pictures you'll get a lot of replies from the board about the truck.

That's what the inside of glovebox says as well! I got a leaky intake manifold and exhaust manifold to fix

Looks like a 1970. The original "gold custom cloth" upholstery was actually a "sandy white" color.

Re: 1972 chevy build/?'s
Yeah and they didn't hook it up right lol! It's not working. There is 4 wires coming from the alternator that are just hanging loose. Only one wire running to the battery and a plug in is hooked up

Re: 1972 chevy build/?'s
Clean up the flat area inside where I circled in red on this picture, there should be a code (example : V1014TRJ) . This will tell you for sure if it's the correct engine for that truck. Not if it's original but if it's correct for that particular truck. If it's correct and the date is prior to the build date of the truck it is also most likely the original engine from the factory.
Get me the code and I will tell you what it means.

Re: 1972 chevy build/?'s
1972bluec20 I will do that this evening! Does my truck look like it sits low. Maybe cause of smaller tires? Or is it just me lol

Re: 1972 chevy build/?'s
The ride height looks about right to me, it may just be the wheels and tires which appear to be correct. Mine is a C20 and sits a little higher in the back, but it doesn't have stock wheels and tires...but they are all the same size all around...I also have heavy duty leaf springs in the rear so that may be why mine sits higher in the back.
Here is mine :

1972bluec20 your definitely running bigger tires than I have. Maybe I just need a little more rubber!

Re: 1972 chevy build/?'s
Ok so here's what we got!
Based on your VIN number : 1970 Chevrolet - 4x2 - V8 Engine - 1/2 Ton - Built in St. Louis, your truck was the 27,142 truck built at that plant in 1970 Based on your engine code : 1970 - 350 engine, conventional cab, Auto Transmission, built at the Flint Michigan plant on Nov, 7th Check to see if your truck was built in November on or before Nov 7th, if so then this engine is most likely original. There is a blue sticker that is in the door jam on the passenger side that will have a build date. Hope this helps!!

Re: 1972 chevy build/?'s
Thanks! Getting up in the morning and installing some gaskets and fixing that alternator. Got to find where all the wires go. Might snap a pic and see what you guys think.
