Dropped spindles with Truck rallys
Purchased a 'new design' CPP 2.5 standard dropped spindle kit/disk brake kit for my '64 with 15x8 truck rallys and now I'm finding they will move my wheels out 5/8-3/4 inch from drum (was told by a CPP rep they would only move out 1/16-1/4 inch). I haven't gotten a definitive answer as to why except that I may be able to send them back to swap them for modular spindles....which will move the wheel slightly in. My question is this... for anyone who has done modular from drums:
How much do they really move the wheel 'in' and is there any interference with the front suspension (lower control arms for example) using CPP modular dropped with 15X8 rallys? Thanks. Oh....and FYI...they say that they now have modular with a 2.5 drop.... |

Re: Dropped spindles with Truck rallys
This thread (although in the 67-72 area) has a lot of discussion about cpp spindles
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=554409 Not sure if it will assist, but maybe...

Re: Dropped spindles with Truck rallys
Thanks for the link......looks like more CPP confusion. Most are running bigger aftermarket wheels though...I already have my 15x8 rallys (4" BS) on the stock drum setup and would like to keep them on the truck. I guess what I'm trying to find out is what is a better fit for these wheels....standard dropped spindles or modular. I'm seeing (and hearing) the standard dropped will move the wheel too far out and will rub on the fender opening....so I'm wondering if the modular will move the wheels too far in. The CPP chart is not accurate and isn't helping......

Re: Dropped spindles with Truck rallys
With 15s there is a chance of rubbing the arms on rims. I know my 81 did.

Re: Dropped spindles with Truck rallys
That's what I've heard also...I've read here from other members that some clearancing of the lower a-arms will probably be necessary ..just don't know how much and which spindles they were using...std or modular. Its seems logical that the more the modulars move the wheels in (from drums....by how much I don't know for sure) the more clearancing will be needed.....And if they move in too far than the rallys may be non-usable ...so maybe I'm better with the std spindles.......that's what I'm trying to find out before I send them back to CPP.

Re: Dropped spindles with Truck rallys
I have standard CPP spindles on my 66 and 15" wheels with the back spacing as your wheels. I did have to do some trimming on the lower control arms. My wheels would hit the arms in a tight turn on the front of the arms.

Re: Dropped spindles with Truck rallys
I too have CPP drop spindles and I run Rallyes.
I had 15*8 up front but they were rubbing more than I liked and I didnt want to grind on my fresh powder coated a-arms so found two 15*6.5" van ralleys, then put 235/70/15's on front with 295/60/15's on rear 8" ralleys.

Re: Dropped spindles with Truck rallys
OK thanks....so with the std spindles there was still some interference with the lca's with the truck ralleys....as well as possible fender clearance issues. So I'm thinking with modulars the fender issues could be solved but lca interference could be worse since modulars are supposed to move the wheel in?

Re: Dropped spindles with Truck rallys
With the modular spindles, being they are only a 2" drop, they clear the 15x8 wheels. I have a set of GM Blazer wheels, which I believe are the same spec as the truck rally wheels. Here is a pic of the clearance (sorry for blurry).

Re: Dropped spindles with Truck rallys
Thanks for the pic. I see the 2" just clear.....if you don't mind me asking again how much did they move the wheel in? I also have 1" drop springs but don't know if I can use them. In the pic I have the same rallys (80's blazer 4x4) with 30x9.5 with about 3-3 1/2" clearance to the top of the fender, and about the same from the lca to the bottom of the rim. The whole assembly just clears the inside of the wheel thankfully.

Re: Dropped spindles with Truck rallys
I purchased the 2.5 drop spindles and 6 lug front disc kit for my '60 from CPP as well way back in 2003. Although I bought them from CPP, these are actually Western Chassis spindles and had all of Western Chassis' paperwork in the boxes! Although CPP would not honor the advertised price and one of my brake calipers was garbage, they fit great, no rubbing and did not move my wheels out any. I run 15 x 8 smoothies

Re: Dropped spindles with Truck rallys
I assume they were std and not modular.....but its weird that they didn't move the wheels out...and you converted from drums? Thought all the std dropped spindles from the beginning (Western I believe) to now moved the wheels out from drums. Thanks for posting.
Hoping others out there have CPP modulars with rallys and can chime in.... |

Re: Dropped spindles with Truck rallys
I bought mine from cpp back in April. I got the 2.5 drop kit for the 6 lug and a 1" spring. What I found was that the front of my truck was already sagging when I measured it. The whole thing only lowered me 2 1/4 ". I have since put 2500+ miles on the truck. I run the 8" 4x4 ralleys and haven't any rubbing issue on the fender or on the front end parts.

Re: Dropped spindles with Truck rallys
Curvedglass, did you install the modular kit...or std? I know what you mean about the sagging....don't know how much I've sagged, but I have about 3.5 inches between the top fender lip and top of tire (30x9.5). My goal other than disks was to get rid of the air space up there (3.5" drop with 2.5 spindle and 1" coil)....

Standard kit. I was going to lower the rear too but after I saw the rake I decided to keep it this way.

Re: Dropped spindles with Truck rallys
Wish I did. After many weeks still getting the run around with CPP. They say they want to get to the bottom of it while I'm still hanging with these spindles. But they don't call back and I have to keep calling them then I get the same excuse time after time....'we don't know what is going on and we want to get to the bottom of it'. Yet nobody there will take a f&*^in measurement and tell me spindles I really have.....

Re: Dropped spindles with Truck rallys
Yes. I believe there still is. I've been working with another rep and heard from him today. Apparently they will be sending me modulars and I'll be sending them the std dropped spindles back. Then when I do the upgrade the agreement is I'll be sending them back the original drum spindles also so that they can use them as a tool to help them do measurements and refine their product dev. As I never renege on a deal and I may not be doing this now for a little while, I may find another pair of used drum spindles and send them now so that they may get the ball rolling. If anyone has a pair of drum spindles they are not using for a 64-66 i'd be interested for this reason.

Re: Dropped spindles with Truck rallys
Hey,
maybe after 3 years they may finally get their numbers right.

Agreed. When I finally do get to it, I'll post pics with measurements and the final results.

Re: Dropped spindles with Truck rallys
I'm so anxious for them to get you those Modular Spindles.
If it happens as they say, you'll have all three at one time for comparison. You'll have the Modular, the non-modular, and your drums. I think we'll finally have some solid numbers. I'm anxious because I'm holding off ordering mine until you get yours resolved. If this Rep of yours comes through, I'd be interested in going through him to get mine.

Re: Dropped spindles with Truck rallys
After they arrive I'll take some pics and measurements though I won't be able to take the drum spindles off the truck just yet as I need to keep the truck functional for a while longer...but I'll check them while they are still on the truck again anyway. I'm putting an APB out on a set of old drum spindles for 64-66 c10 swb so I can get this straightened out.
