Window tint

Want to shade the back of my head . I'm sure many of you get very hot from the sun know what I mean.
Are there any DIY dark tint kits that work well ? The type that don't
bubble or peal after a year or so ?
My truck is a 68 C10

It's not that it can't be done, but I see so many poorly done ones that I have to imagine doing it right isn't trivial. Maybe its prep, maybe its better product, maybe its skill in application, but whatever it is, I'd pay to have it done.

At least for a single window because that should keep it cheap.

You likely know your laws better than me, but I think California has some fairly strict tint laws (I'd want them too if I was a cop having to pull people over). Not sure if they apply to the rear window at all though. Check before spending the money.

amazon and ebay has precut stuff for like 20 bucks. I'm not sure how good it is but try it out and report back here

I can get the stuff at cost through work but have to buy so much, its cheaper to pay someone to do it. I have a buddy that does the pre-cut stuff but again its not a huge savings.

Um, except for the windshield these trucks are all flat glass, get a glass company to cut you a piece of tinted glass and have it tempered. Why do film when you don't have too?

I'm sure no one wants to hear this but I got tint off of ebay for one of my other cars. It was precut, and it was fine. The big trick is to take the window out. The only window I didnt tint was the very back hatch... because it was already tinted. Lucky for us our rear glass is perfectly flat so its easy to do without bubbles if you take it out. Plus if you take it out you can run the tint to the very edge of the glass and you wont see it once it's back in the rubber. I never had any experience doing tint, but I watched a few videos, and figured it out. I had it on my s10 blazer for 5 years and it never bubbled.

I buy the Black Magic or whatever it is tint from walmart. I've used it on many vehicles and do it myself. I don't think it's anymore than $13. One roll will do the back window and an eyebrow. It works well for me. I've had it on my dodge for years with no problems. It's not hard to do yourself especially on newer vehicles with the black border around the rear window. I did my 72 and jacked it up a little. I'd suggest taking the back window out and it would be easy peasy. Do yourself a favor and buy the kit if you decide to do it. The rubber smoother outer is well worth it.

Don't have to get it tempered. Most glass shops have tinted safety glass in stock. Way cheaper and still safe.

I was generalizing I guess, the back glass could be laminated and be legal I think, but driver and passenger front side glass has to be tempered... legally, at least in the US.

if you are going to do it with the glass in it's really hard to get it all the way to the edges and you end up with some small gaps around it. what I did was got some narrow black pin stripping tape from parts store and went around the whole window afterwards. looks decent and really saves you a lot of hassle trying to get the tint perfectly tight against the window seal. another tip if your going to put large vinyl letters across your back window as a joke take them off before you leave the truck parked for 10 years it's now a bad joke that won't go away.

I used this 3M film in a couple cars and will in my truck as well as soon as I get some new glass.

It is a special heat rejection multi layered film and I can tell you it really works. It's a bit pricey but worth it.

You won't regret it. They have been in business since the 80's. They do most of the work for the dealerships here. They have done every vehicle I've owned. Lifetime warranty on the work, very reasonable cost. It really is a no-brainer.

Once you start talking about taking out the glass, or expensive but the best in films, I guess I don't really understand why you wouldn't just get a piece of actual tinted glass cut. It's flat glass it's not tricky or crazy expensive.

Here in SoCal tint is cheap. Most places will do a window for $30-40 each. It would take them about 30 mins max to do it at a shop.

I've done a little DIY tinting. It is a good way to test your patience.

To answer the original questions, I like SolarGuard film. I think its made by 3M. it has never turned purple on me. But I like it because its a little "thicker" and easier to install.

in casse you havnt already made a decision heres my 2 cents. you can do it yourself if you have basic skills. 3m is the best brand of tint, hands down. but any will work just fine if installed right.its all in prep.my buddy and his family have been in the auto glass buisness for over 20 years and we have been trading skills for a long time.i teach him mechanics in exchange for auto glass know how. with that said its still easier and not much more to have a shop do it for you. again thoe just my 2 cents. either way you go post pics when finished!!! if you decide to do it yourself id be glad to give you any tips i can

Im getting ready to take both side glasses and vent windows and back glass to a local glass shop. They priced tinting all for $80.00
Ive fooled with tint kits before----I wouldnt Do it again for $100.00
