EFI conversion on a 1981 7.4L 454
Just curious if anyone has tried to take on this type of project on a 454. I picked up a 1981 gmc 1 ton 4x4 long wheel base truck and im thinking about converting the 7.4L 454 over to EFI. My engine knowledge is limited but I do know I have and awesome Demon carb on the engine right now and um......thats about it.
Im considering running this for the conversion. http://www.jegs.com/i/FAST/244/30227...arentProductId does anyone know if this will work? |

Sure it will work but there's better cheaper set ups out there.
Like this. http://howellefi.com/gm-tbi-products...-tbi-kits.html And the nice thing is they'll have tech support for you. |

I disagree with geezer on the better part. The kits he listed are for stock motors. At best the only upgrade you could do would be a small cam and headers. With the Fast EFI set up you can upgrade down the road if you wanted to. For $200 difference I would go with the one you have listed or the Holley kit. I have used stand alone kits from both Fast and Holley with great success.

I am amassing the parts to convert my 350 to EFI. I will be using MegaSquirt II PCB3.0 and it will control ignition as well.
http://www.diyautotune.com/ I am running MegaSquirt on a Toyota engine, running Honda injectors, with GSXR throttlebodies, and Ford distributorless ignition. If you can tune a carb, you can tune with MegaSquirt. I recognize it isn't for everyone, but it ~does~ work, and it ~is~ affordable. Tuning, though, takes some time.... But so does tuning a carb & HEI. Not affiliated, blah blah blah.

Howdy Okanagan from the Kootenays, eh. I've used Megasquirt too, and I agree it works. But, to enjoy Megasquirt, you have to be the type of person who enjoys learning and reading. I'm sure I've read over 100 pages of Megasquirt docs. If you just want it to work, and don't much care how it works, Megasquirt isn't for you. The fast ezefi would probably be more suitable, although I have not used the fast kit, so I can't comment on that first hand.

That is very true. An off-the-shelf setup will cost more, but it's a lot more plug and play. Megasquirt is like running Linux, or building your own car from scratch - it's not for everyone.
