sealer on shims?
what type of sealer on the shims? these are off a 221 t/f case. they were leaking and the main rear shaft was a little loose. had 4 .010 shims and the cover has a small grove in it at bearing contact. I have another good cover to use.

Re: sealer on shims?
I sued High Tack gasket sealant #765-1221, but wonder if a copper coat gasket compound would be better?
I would also like to here from others what they use.

Re: sealer on shims?
Boy it's probably been 20 years since I rebuilt mine. If I recall I didn't use anything as the shims are used to set the end play on the shaft. Correct? It wept oil and I got tired of it so I cleaned the t case and cap and put a bead of gasket sealer round the outside and wiped off the excess. Used black and it was unnoticeable and worked. Keep us posted.

Re: sealer on shims?
I used something called Hylomar Blue on mine. Seems to work well. Otherwise, I would use the black Permatex form a gasket.

Re: sealer on shims?
Permatex #2 non hardening sealer should work fine. This is what we used on ours. We were wondering what you used for new seals. Evan

Re: sealer on shims?
I used Indian head stuff on mine. the seals are avl from most auto part stores. rockauto lists them.

Re: sealer on shims?
I guess the copper doesn't work because that is what I tried to use and obviously that leaked.

Re: sealer on shims?
Couple years ago I discovered Permatex® Gear Oil RTV Gasket Maker. As its name suggests, it's made specifically for use with gear oil. Good stuff. Not just to make gaskets, you can spread it thinly to seal & prevent leaks.

Re: sealer on shims?
Jason--it really didn't leak just weeped, maybe a drop or two after running. I almost used the copper as i had some on the shelf. from what i have read these 221's don't seal real well anyway. my old one had under coating on most of it and dirt only leaked at the seals.

Re: sealer on shims?
If a T221 isn't leaking, it is out of oil.

Re: sealer on shims?
I do get the impression that oil weeping was, in general, kind of expected or acceptable on motors and transmissions and transfer cases back in the day. But I dont really know since I wasn't alive back then

Re: sealer on shims?
Some, not all. Detroit diesels are widely known as "Green Leakers".
