whats a loud exhaust system?

im looking to go with a hotrod loud exhaust sound. whats a good recommendation for a loud exhaust? I currently have 2 glasspacks installed. are the flowmaster 40s or 50s louder than my glasspack?

i currently have a 350 with 2 glaspacks installed right now

thanks!

Re: whats a loud exhaust system?

For me its not the loudness that makes the sound but the tone. I have these on my 402 and am well pleased.

Re: whats a loud exhaust system?

You could always run open fenderwell headers, if the object is just to be really loud.

Re: whats a loud exhaust system?

Some of it depends on where you place the muffler. Nearest the motor or at the rear and how much pipe is aft of the muffler. I have headers on a 350, Smithys under the seat area and dumpin in front of the back tire. Wife hates it cause she can't hear the radio. I love it. Just sayin - - -

Re: whats a loud exhaust system?

I had 2 1/2" exhaust with Flowmaster 40's on my 68 Camaro and it was awesome. Sounded loud and bad ass. Got several compliments on the sound.

Blowmasters are made to get a stock engine to sound badAxx. Magnaflows are made to make a BadAxx engine sound good.

My magnaflows sound like this:

Re: whats a loud exhaust system?

I've got 2 1/2" ramhorns into 2 1/2" duals with Flowmaster 40s. They exit at the back corners with 4" tips. Sound great, but require you to have a tight interior or they are too loud inside. Mine doesn't have a tight interior yet, so forget the stereo...

Re: whats a loud exhaust system?

I went with my friend who happens to be a mechanic suggestion and put black widows exhaust and i can't describe how amazing they sound. Loud?yes drone absolutely none. Got them on a 406 roller and hooker pro comps and so glad I did not go with flows. There are a few sound clips if you search, you wont regret it.

Re: whats a loud exhaust system?

I used to want a really loud exhaust, so I had two glasspacks going out the side, it got old very quick cause I do stay around 2800 to 3200 rpm when I drive the interstate

Re: whats a loud exhaust system?

I'm with you, Blackedout. The loud is very cool pulling into cruise night, but gets very old when you actually use it. When I first bought mine, it had glass packs and huge 3 inch chrome tips, which looked and sounded ridiculous on an otherwise bone stock truck. To each his own though.

Why not Y pipes with electric dumps? I'm doing it on my big block.
Quiet when you want it, loud as it can be when it won't get you in trouble.

Re: whats a loud exhaust system?

This is what is going in my project, it's an internally bypassable muffler. Basically a muffler with the cutout internal to the muffler.

Re: whats a loud exhaust system?

I have flowmaster 40 series true dual dumped before the axle.

It's pretty loud and sounds gnarly when I floor it.....it does however have a drone at about 30-40 mph....after about 45 is quiets down. I have the TH350 btw.

Sometimes I think they're too loud and consider getting something more quiet but I kinda like them.

Here's a cold start video I made :

Re: whats a loud exhaust system?

I have a 3" system running into a set of 12" dynomax bullets. Full exhaust to the rear bumper dumps at the body line. Added a H-pipe to relieve the pop and snap.

This is on a 6.0 LS

Re: whats a loud exhaust system?

I have electric cutouts on my 496 and a set of generic turbo mufflers dumper before the back axle. If I'm at a drive through I have to shut it off when its going through the mufflers, so its plenty deep. But if you want everyone to know you're within 3 miles, flip the switch and wait 3 seconds and you have open headers. There's not quite another feeling like it when you uncork them! And when you have had enough of the loud (or you see a police officer), flip the switch back and you have "quiet" again

Re: whats a loud exhaust system?

Larger diameter tube will tone down the sound along with the muffler. Glass pack style mufflers will not be as crisp as a chambered muffler. Flowmasters are chambered and have a crisper definition between the "thumps". Magnaflow is a glass pack. If your motor is built run 3", if not run 2.25-2.5" to the muffler and 3" out. If you are looking for loud but not open header race car I would recommend a dynomax bullet. It is a "racecar" muffler that is a short straight through glasspack. My last truck was a RHD Toyota Mini with a 350, comp 262 cam. 2.25 pipe Y'd into 3" with one dynomax bullet. It had the iconic muscle car sound. Not to loud at idle, but when you got on it, it was very loud.
