steering box lube question
guys I,am a old crippled fella and I,am almost 100% sure my (c-10) manuel steering box needs lubed. can one of you fellas tell me where the fill plug is located ? its real hard for me to get up and down nowdays. (getting old is a bugger fellas so enjoy your health while you have it)

I had to rebuild the manual box in my Corvette after a bearing went bad. I remember using grease in it.
No fill plug for liquid lubricant

I think one of the three bolts on the top of the box can be pulled out to add lube. Someone else will chime in. As for getting older, if you find a way to slow it down, let me know!

you can remove the bolt at the top of the 1st picture (the one that is not in line with the other 3) to add lube to the gear. I also used chassis lube rather than oil to lube mine up.

WELL I wanted to experiment some today so i bought a large tube of lubriplate #105 engine assembly white grease . i pulled the bolt out of the steering box,inserted the tube nozzle and put as much as would go in ( about 1/3 of the large tube), put the bolt back in and went for a drive. boy did it ever make a difference. so tomarrow i,am gonna remove the bolt again and see if i can get the box to take more grease. more to come...

On the older trucks that actually have a fill plug on the steering box, many people use John Deere Cornhead grease. This grease is self leveling and will really flow well in the gear box. Bob, be careful about packing the box too full as you will want room for the grease to expand when it gets hot. Otherwise, it will have no place to go other than past the seals.
Most manual steering gear boxes don't use straight chassis grease, but rather a self leveling grease. However, chassis grease is a common substitute and I have not heard of rapid wear/failure due to chassis grease. Just FWIW and most of my experience is with 20 year older hardware. |
