Thank you! The demo construction company guy is a friend of mine and has another 9 lights for me. I am waiting for the go ahead on the actual bldg teardown. The 10"X10" laminated timbers are 25' long, along with 13"X13" laminated timbers. These will really steady the garage and give me the look I want. I'm loading pics now.
That laminated beam on top of the 13x13 is almost 5' tall, yes that is 5 feet tall on top of a 25' beam! The 13x13s are 80' apart and the 10x10s are 25' apart.

Re: Large fan for my garage build!

Last pic of the beams!
Old phone pics so they are all sideways.
Sorry you'll have to turn your head! Lol
These will be nice protruding into the garage adding to the look!
Let me know if there are any obvious issues using these beams please.
I have to get it designed but the hardest part is getting the materials for a good deal.

Re: Large fan for my garage build!

I can't wait to see your shop build Mike. Like I mentioned before, I really dig it when folks can recycle old fixtures/materials like you're planning to do.

I don't see anything to worry about with those beams but I'm no expert either. One thing for sure is they are going to be very, very heavy. Make sure you have your wheaties before moving those puppies around.

Re: Large fan for my garage build!

Saving for concrete but I keep finding trucks.lol I guess the trucks are paying for the building anyway. I bought 4 trucks in 4 weeks. I guess I need to sell some parts or trucks now.
I'm very excited to get the bldg and not work in my cramped 3 car garage. Plus my wife isn't fond of parking outside either. I may have to take the winter off to provide parking for the girls in my life. At least until I need the garage for specific tasks.
I figure I'll appreciate it when I get the bldg that much more! I'll make a thread of getting them, trucking them home, and the entire build on here of course.

Re: Large fan for my garage build!

Thank you! If it works it will be great for cutting up heads or lettuce! If not it's an awesome coffee table in the end room on the garage. I have a ton of stuff for decoration/wall art. Front ends, a cut bed, dashes, antique fuel cans, etc. Wow it's sounds like I'm a hoarder huh! I'm excited to get going and my friend said they are planing to start deconstruction in Feb of the 320'x850' building.

Re: Large fan for my garage build!

always thought recycled lumber was the best to build with
i wood (pun intended) incorporate some of those 5 foot glulams into your future garage build
even if it meant stacking 2 on top of each other to make one wall
or have one re-sawn into 2.5 foot beams down the center of your shop
or both

Dang! I learned something today:

Glulam – Short for Glued Laminated timber.

Thanks Ogre

Re: Large fan for my garage build!

posts, beams and purlins: since school is in session
posts hold up beams, beams span posts, purlins span beams, decking spans purlins

while daddy'o's barnasaurus is nice, big and all metal... i still like all that wood
are they tearing down the building to landfill everything or recycling the wood?
i could design a very cool shop based on using that wood
i'd be there with a truck, trailer and big chain saw if i were you

Re: Large fan for my garage build!

Here's a picture of the lights for the garage I want. I am concerned with load bearing of the beams. I will be getting way more than I can use from my friend. I would like to add car port style overhangs in front of all 5 doors. I'll post some better pics of what I'm aiming for tonight after I get home.
It will be 40x120 or so! Ill do an additional 20-30 foot overhang on the end with the room.

There is so many posts in the bldg. the 10x10s are every 25' on the perimeter. Each one has a beam connecting them together as ogre mentioned. The 13x13s are across the 320 width every 80'. I should get plenty of them for anything I wanna make. They are anchored to the concrete with 1/4" angle iron 10" wide to the floor.

I thought about using a glulam beam as the ridge board to build the rafters in place. I'd like to cut the extra length of the 25' beams down and use them as supports for the beams around the edge and the bldg and on both sides of the 13x13s in the center of the garage.

Re: Large fan for my garage build!

Here is the outlets Id like to have but I may have to scale back a little!
The camper will be on the end with the boat next to it... so, I can drive in and drop them, then drive out.
The filled in circles are the water hose bibs, faucets and water heater. I also have a slide that has the heated floors planned out.

Re: Large fan for my garage build!

Don't cheap out on your outlets - the more the better. Cheaper to do now than later. Have you thought about adding a RV outlet for your camper? What about adding water on the end where your camper and boat will be? Will you be on a septic system? Think about adding a clean out so you can dump the camper waste. You could have your camper setup inside your shop as an added guest room or dog house.

The clean out stubs (2) are already installed on the line to the lagoon. One for the garage and one for the future pool changing room! I am installing 220 outlet on the far wall for the camper to plug into. I assumed I'd run the hose there if I needed it but your right I should just hard plumb it into the wall. The room on the left will have a bedroom on the end and it will leave 30' for the kitchen and living room. That side will be decked for upper storage that's under the rafters.
Now if I could just sell some trucks... Lol

Re: Large fan for my garage build!

without dimensions it's hard to see 40x120 out of your drawings

one thing to consider is heat, heating a 4800 sqft shop would put me in the poor house
i like to work in comfort aka sans down jacket

and unless your budget is unlimited 4800 sqft of concrete can get expensive
my choice would be to partition a shop that big into workable zones
pour a slab in half the building; living area and 2 roll up doors
i'd also throw a wall up in between door 2 and 3 and have that portion as insulated, heated working shop

the other half of the building could be gravel floor, uninsulated and unfinished
camper and boat storage and extra vehicle storage doesn't need to be heated
you can always go back in 10 years when funds are available and pour the other half

Sorry for the confusion. Tentatively I'm looking at 10' doors with 5' between the doors except on the ends I'll give an extra 2.5' so there is room to walk around the camper and use the extra space on the other end for benches. I considered a wall to divide the camper/boat side from the rest of the "working area" for the same reasons you posted.
There will be additional posts for the 20-30' remainder for a pergola style area on the end off of the room. it will be an outdoor lounge area to relax after swimming (future pool). I think I can do it in steps like you mentioned but I still need to consider cement approaches for the garage doors too.

Re: Large fan for my garage build!

Ogre,
Can I span 15' center to center with these 10x10s if I use surface attach the posts? I'd like to get 12-13' from the floor (plus the 10" beam height) to set the rafters on. I'll try to post a picture of the beam placement tomorrow during work so you'll have an idea of the placement I'd like to use.

Re: Large fan for my garage build!

not sure what your asking, read post 13 on nomenclature for posts, beams and purlins
a recycled beam used as a post is a post; a recycled post used as a beam is a beam
''surface attach'' can mean a lot of things

if they are tearing down the building and putting everything in the landfill
you could build your whole shop out of recycled timbers and save them landfill charges
you could use bolted joints or timer framing joints

do some internet research on timber framing, it does look pretty awesome

you have to realize i have built some strange buildings over the years
this is my house in north carolina and my shop
