Rottenwood Garages first square body project.
We tend to stick with the older stuff around here but this came across a few months ago. After a few special touches she is on the road.
1986 Silverado, 92K on body. NO RUST always garage kept. The original owner got tired of the weak 305 and installed a crate 350 backed by a 200R4 that now has 2K on it. It was sold new in Smyrna, Ga and always in Smyrna/Marietta.(2 owner) PW,PD, cruise and AC. We added a 5-5 DJM drop, 2.5 manifolds back with Flowmasters, took off the factory rear step and added a smooth style rear bumper, 275/60/15 with vintage American Racing Daisy's.

Re: Rottenwood Garages first square body project.
200-4R is an unusual choice for a truck with a Chevy engine.

Re: Rottenwood Garages first square body project.
It's unusual behind a Chevy engine. It's the choice for overdrive when you have a different GM engine since it has the universal bellhousing but for a Chevy engine the 700-R4 is the first choice as it is better.

They appear to have 2 different bolt patterns, came is several Chevrolet cars and is/was certainly a popular mod in the car/truck/street rod world from what I have read. Not as strong as a 700 but commonly used regardless. Glad you were able to shed some light on the subject though and give me something to research as I have never owned a 200.

Re: Rottenwood Garages first square body project.
Not a popular choice behind in a truck at all. I don't know where you are reading that. They are popular in mid 80's Monte carlo, grand prix and cutlass's but def not trucks. That is why you see the 700R4 in more trucks due to their ability to work a little harder then the 200's. Still even the 700's are a weak trans unless upgraded.

Re: Rottenwood Garages first square body project.
They were offered in more cars than that chart, but most of the cars they were offered in had a motor other than a small block Chevy. Back then just because the car was a Chevy doesn't mean it got a Chevy engine. The Buick V6, Olds V8, I put one in my LeMans with the Pontiac 350. Well, I put a couple in my LeMans, they didn't last. The best ones came in the Buick Grand National, they had the turbo V6. Yes it has a universal bellhousing, two different bolt patterns but if the engine was a Chevy it usually got the 700R4. While the 200-4R does bolt to Chevy engines it is the second choice unless you like to be different.

Re: Rottenwood Garages first square body project.
Ok guys, as usual the thread has deviated from its original point. Thanks for the information and opinions on the 200R4 or 2004R. I didn't build it, it was put in the truck 14 years ago, has 2000 miles on it and works great. No, its not the first choice for an overdrive but its not a work truck, not used for hauling and towing, the vehicle weights almost the same as the cars that it came out of, the old man had it "built up" and once again....its an overdrive and it runs and drives GREAT. Out of the 150+ classic cars and trucks I have had or built few have had overdrive and I'm elated to have it.

Deviated? I thought we were talking about your truck. Wasn't that the purpose of this thread?

Just to add a .. why .. to the reason of someone using a 200r over a 700r might be ... The 200r was built as an overdrive transmission able to get better fuel mileage than the 700r overdrive . The 200r had less internal resistance and power loss . Source information will vary , but it seems the 200r will save between 5 to 10 horsepower . I can't remember exactly , but I think the 200r was good for between 1 - 2 mpg over the 700r. The 200r can be race built and plenty tough. |
