1982 Silverado Single Din Install Questions

I am looking to put a new stereo into my 1982 silverado, and from what I have read, I need this install kit: http://www.metraonline.com/part/87-99-3052 . As far as wiring the head unit, is this what I need to wire it to the truck: http://www.metraonline.com/part/71-1677-1 ? If so, how does one go about wiring it? Is it basically plug and play, or do I need a harness adapter depending on what head unit I get? Thanks

Re: 1982 Silverado Single Din Install Questions

The wire connector is what would plug into the back of the factory radio. You would need a connector that would plug into the factory harness. You then splice the wires with the aftermarket radio wire connector.
Here is the connector for the factory connector.

Re: 1982 Silverado Single Din Install Questions

I wouldn't need the connector that I had linked to then?

Technically no. Before you spend any money on it I would check the radio connector you have now. I assume its the factory radio? You just never know (for the most part) on an older vehicle what someone has done.

Re: 1982 Silverado Single Din Install Questions

It is the factory radio, and I am pretty sure it is AM only. I am going to have to be cutting wires and splicing, right? Is there any way to not cut wires even if it includes paying a little more? Thanks for the help so far

Re: 1982 Silverado Single Din Install Questions

If you buy that harness I linked too it should plug into the factory harness. The only splicing would be between the adapter you got and the aftermarket radio wires. You wouldn't have to touch the truck wiring. I would however run new speaker wire. (yours may only have one speaker anyway like my 74)
As for the splicing most of the harness adapters and radio wires have went to the same color for the same wire (speaker Positive is green and speaker ground is green with black stripe for example.)
Still follow the wire color codes on the adapter harness and the radio manual though.

Re: 1982 Silverado Single Din Install Questions

I think I understand now, but I do much better with simple drawings. Would you be able to make a quick little diagram explaining the last post of yours? It would be much appreciated. Thank you

Re: 1982 Silverado Single Din Install Questions

Does that box that talks about the splices just represent the splices themselves?

Thanks for taking the time to make that by the way

Re: 1982 Silverado Single Din Install Questions

I think crutchfield may have some installation instructions/diagrams on their website. I had to splice my Alpine because the original connector was gone with the original radio. P.O. had installed an aftermarket radio already and it was a botched job.

Re: 1982 Silverado Single Din Install Questions

In that diagram, the box looks like it represents the splices themselves. When you buy the connector, one end will plug into your factory radio wiring that you unplugged from the back of your factory radio. The other end will just be wires. You'll have to splice those into the wires that come out of the back of your new radio. This way, you won't be cutting up your truck's wiring, and it can all be returned to stock if desired.

Re: 1982 Silverado Single Din Install Questions

Yep, the box was just a paint text box. :p It
The wires between the aftermarket radio and the harness would be the only splicing. As Steve said, this doesn't touch the trucks wiring. This is the route I have always went with in my cars. I never understood why people cut the factory wiring when this option was available.

Re: 1982 Silverado Single Din Install Questions

One more question: does the actual din cage come with the aftermarket head unit, or is that something that has to be bought separate?

Normally that's included with the radio.
