Used Air Bags
Hi Guys. Would you purchase used air bags? I am thinking about purchasing some older model Slam Specialties RS-72 air bags for my truck. The seller doesn't know anything about them other than that they hold air. How long do air bags typically last?

Re: Used Air Bags
He's selling them for $35 for the pair, because he doesn't know the brand, model, size, etc. But I can tell from the markings that they are Slam RS-72's. So now I'm left with a decision... Take a risk on used bags for $35, or spend $130-$180 on some new bags.

Re: Used Air Bags
I don't know much about automotive air bags, but on 18 wheeler trucks the air bags can go a million miles. If they don't have cracks or look skanky, I'd take a chance on them.

I bought a full air ride setup a couple of years ago but I knew the guy that was selling it. I am just now ready to install it on a '67 Panel Truck. It is pretty easy to see if there are any problems with them by pushing and bending them to see if there are any age cracks in the rubber.... Not much that can go wrong with them other than that and holes. If the guy has an air compressor put a little air in them and see if there are any leaks. You only need about 5 psi. Soapy water in a spray bottle is the best for leak testing. LockDoc

Re: Used Air Bags
Thanks guys. The guy text me back and said there were some cracks, but that no bubbles formed when he did the soapy water test.

Re: Used Air Bags
My entire air ride system is built on used parts purchased from craigslist. Used bags as well. The only new item I purchased was the air line. I have had my truck bagged for at least 5 years now. Only problem was a dirty sticky valve. The bags I used had a rubbed spot on one of them and no issues so far. The best part is I only have about $300 in the parts.
