68 gmc & new to forum

Hey everyone! My name is Travis. I'm new to the forum, and want to introduce myself. I'm currently restoring a 1968 gmc half ton short bed. Factory it was a 396/402 big Block w/ th400 trans. I bought it about a year ago as a rolling frame with the cab and front fenders. It's now temporarily powered by a 305/th350 and is finally complete enough to be road worthy. I did track down and acquired the original trans that actually came out of my truck, and am working on finding a 396 for it also to bring it back to its original badassness. Looking to meet some cool new people with the same passion for the 67-72 trucks that I have, and for some cool ideas to put towards my build. Looking forward to talking to you all!

welcome to the forum! awesome truck, i'm very fond of original big block shortbeds. as a 68 yours would have been a 396 not a 402. there's a thread here that someone started a registry for big block trucks...

I have always been curious about what trucks were 396 and which ones were 402's. My truck is actually built from 2 trucks, one of them a 1968 gmc big block half ton stepside, and a 1970 gmc big block fleet side half ton. Both short bed trucks. The majority of the truck is still the 70, with the exception of the hood and the cab which has the only visible vin (which is why I have it registered as a 68). Would the 70 have had the 402? My best friend has a 72 Chev Cheyenne10 stepside that is a big block truck, (amazing truck btw) and because we were able to run his casting numbers we were able to see it was a 402, but it was badged 396, so we just assumed that all of them were the same way.
