5 speed trans noise
I have a 91 Silverado with the original 5 speed trans, I've recently noticed a noise at low speeds going to a stop that sounds like a screech. The noise is intermittent right now, I only notice it in 1st or 2nd gear. I can feel the vibrations through the clutch pedal and shifter when it does the screech noise. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Re: 5 speed trans noise
Possible input shaft bearing or throw out bearing, just had a 95 K2500 in the shop acting similar to your description, input bearing problem

Re: 5 speed trans noise
Any other opinions? How involved is it to change those bearings? Does the trans have to come all the way out?

Re: 5 speed trans noise
The trans has to be off the bell housing for the throw out bearing, and if the input bearing then the trans has to be out and disassembled to replace the input bearing. There were so many problems with the pre 96 5 speed trans input bearings that the last one in our shop we updated to a wrecking yard 97 trans with the hydraulic throw out bearing(no clutch slave cylinder) as in 96 they went to a noticeably larger bearing and seeing this guys truck was getting his 3rd trans in 200k mi he was happy to do that.
But yes, trans out for either bearing. If you really just feel it in the clutch pedal and no groaning/grinding sounds on takeoff likely just the throw out bearing. Good time to do a clutch also as your most of the way there. |
