Ok guys we are putting the wiring back in place. 1955 2nd series truck...we have converted to an alternator system. My question is do I need to do something to convert the Amp Gauge, buy one that's compatible or ?

Re: Amp Gauge Conversion?

Ogre will probably answer your question, details are in his Truk build thread on how to convert if you want.

Re: Amp Gauge Conversion?

maybe yes and maybe no

the stock amp gauge is rated at 30 amps, all the power for your truck goes thru the amp gauge
newer alternators are rated at 60 to 120 amps and can fry the harness
best thing is to remove the amp gauge from the equation and convert it to a volt gauge

more detail in a write up in my build thread, if you like it, comment in my thread

truk off, volts 0. not full discharge, using stock gauge face plate for amp gauge

truk on, volts approx 14 v, centered on the gauge is 12 v

Re: Amp Gauge Conversion?

pulling the instrument cluster out also gives you a good opportunity to replace all those burnt out dash lights
clean up and refurbish everything while your in there, brightens the place up a bit
i used spray bomb crinkle paint on the back plate to get that finish

Re: Amp Gauge Conversion?

Check my post from almost three years ago. Still working exactly as it should.
