rack n pinon

Hello;

Has anyone tryed to put a rack n pinon on a S10 front end when changing over to the 50 model body style?

The reason I'm asking is that I have the body n fenders on my project, the front end set right in the fenders but the radiator will have to be set at an angle to fit under the hood.( See pic on Frankenstine build).

Thinking a rack n pinon would let me do away with the gear box n all the steering assy.

That would let me use the radiator support out of the 50 model front end.

Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Re: rack n pinon

I'm looking into the same thing myself, I've heard a 90 cavalier rack is the right size to match up with the old linkage. The ends I think need to be shorten a little. Look on the s10forum. There's also rack n pinion kits for s10's as well but there a bit pricy.
Let me know if you go that route, I'm not that far in mine yet to give it a try (91' frame 51' body)

Coldshot.

I'm looking into the rack/pinon set up for my 89 s10 with 50 chevy set up.
Ck out my build "Frankenstine" on this site.

The reason I'm looking into a r/p set up is as it set I would have to set the radiator in at an angle, to clear the gear box set up.

It has been cold here; so have not gotten out to the junk yard to ck out different type of r/p yet.

Looking for p/s type r/p to make it steer better.

I'm trying for the same thing. Autocross is in the future for mine.
Have you checked out this thread?

If you modify the rad support it will clear the box.

There's another thread on a different forum that I can't find the link to right now that a read earlier today that the guy used a late 90's Dakota rack witch is a center pivot style and mounted the original linkage (inner tie rods pretty much) to it. Said it worked good for pushing around the shop but hasn't been road tested.

coldshot;

Yes; I have read that info.

I have set my cab down to 2' off the s10 frame so I started with a much lower ride height then most.

I just think that with a r/p steering it would be something different on one of these projects.

Mine is going to be a daily coffee shop driver n just around town driver.

Re: rack n pinon

I found that link for that one I mensioned. Checked out your build and it's quite the mash up of trucks. Looks good, I'm doing a bit of a frankin build as well but mines got import in the mix. 6L iron block LS, 88 toyota supra rear independent suspention, saving for a T56 wile I mount the body.
Here's the link

Hope that gets the wheels turning for an option.
