Snowblower on a pickup truck?
So thought up a contraption while at work the pther day, snow blower mounted on the front of a pickup. Heres how i think i could make it work, simple, i think. Use the pto hole on a sm465 transmission and run a pto shaft to the front of the truck and run the shaft to a blower. I was thinking the blower could be take off of a tractor. For the up and down on the blower you could use an electric or hydraulic winch (also driven off the pto), and to control the chute you could have an electric motor with a worm gear to control where it blows the snow..
How does a transmission pto compare to a tractor pto in rpm, would a truck pto have enough speed to turn the blower? Or am i insane and scrap the whole idea... For the record i will probably never build this but.. Is it possible? |

Re: Snowblower on a pickup truck?
HHHmMMMmmm... Odd, but not impossible, But I think the reason most snowblower vehicles have a separate engine for the blower is why it would be difficult to run truck and snowblower. Your pto gearing would have to be incredible high I would imagine, remember, this is all just my 2 cents.

Re: Snowblower on a pickup truck?
I figured a mildly built big block would have enough snot to run it... Maybe with the gear not so much? I dont know. Im basing that off of the fact that a 170hp tractor has no problem running a blower like that... Who knows

Re: Snowblower on a pickup truck?
I thought about this a year or two ago and did a little research. At that time there was one for sale on the Duluth, MN craigslist.

Re: Snowblower on a pickup truck?
I don't live where snow removal is necessary, but a big problem I see is that when you push in the clutch, the blower will stop. Seems to me you may be swapping gears some and that could be an issue. Also not sure where the PTO shaft will come out up front. May not be where you want it. I think if I was doing this, I would investigate a belt driven clutch pump and do it hydraulically. Then you could change to a winch and already be set up for it if you had a common mount setup. Or run a log splitter.

Re: Snowblower on a pickup truck?
With the PTO, wouldn't you run into problems with snowblower RPMs when you push the gas to make the truck move faster and let off the gas to slow down? Wouldn't the snowblower need a constant minimum RPM?

Re: Snowblower on a pickup truck?
I remember seeing one on Ebay years ago.
It had a V8 in the bed to power the hydraulics, a cap covered the bed. The blower had two augers that were wider then the truck and at least 3 feet tall. The truck also had built in jacks on all four corners that would lift the whole truck off the ground. IIRC it was being sold by a small airport. this might be it http://www.yesterdaystruck.com/contents/tpic721.htm
