Dana 60 diff cover question
Hey guys.....have a question. I have a Dana 60 front axle that has a differential cover that has raised ribs between the bolt holes. The manual says this design is a gasket style seal and NOT any type of silicone sealant. With that said. ...I had asked a mechanic and the suggested I could use RTV on it anyways. Has anyone have an opinion or experience with this?? Thanks in advance

Re: Dana 60 diff cover question
I do. I don't use RTV. In fact if you pull the diff cover you can use the gasket again if it's in good shape. Recently I just replaced oil in both diffs. I bought felpro for front and rear. Front gasket in 60 looked good do I re-used it. No RTV no leaks. It's always been that way for me, and always will.
Use recommended gasket torque to 35 ft lbs and forget the RTV.

Re: Dana 60 diff cover question
Probably could get some tomorrow or so. The "raised ribs" look like valleys from the back of the cover (the actual face that mates to the pumpkin).

Re: Dana 60 diff cover question
Check out "The Right Stuff" from NAPA. Super good stuff for diff cover, I have not used diff gasket in years. Good Luck, Bruce

Re: Dana 60 diff cover question
That is good stuff. Have to hit the cover several times with a hammer and then give up and jam a screwdriver in there and then pry it open. Good stuff.
I am now sold on lubelocker different cover gaskets. Reusable, no rtv, steel core. Have three of those now. |

Re: Dana 60 diff cover question
Use a thin uniform bead. Be sure to circle each hole and be on the inside of the grooves you described. I am not a big fan of silicone- I have had to fix a lot of leaks because of this. Try to use an actual gasket making compound like "The Right Stuff" or equivalent. Bruce
