Re: 2015 hot rod power tour announcement

I said I wasn't going to go this year, but the missus thinks we're getting old and wants to try to have a little rug rat next year, so this may be my last chance to go for quite some time (at least for the whole shebang, hopefully next years route will run from LA over to the east coast again and I can go to a stop or two).

I drove my car on the first two legs this year. I'll be driving the car again. It rides, handles, and gets a lot better fuel mileage than the truck (both my toys have OD) but the car gets around 16/22mpg cty/hwy and the truck only gets around 11/16mpg cty/hwy. It will be about $150-200 less to drive the car. That pays for registration and my food for the week (I'm cheap.)

Re: 2015 hot rod power tour announcement

This is on my bucket list and I wanted to have a truck with A/C before I went, which I do now. So from what 67ChevyRedneck says does the Power Tour start in the East one year and the West the next year? When I do the Power Tour I would like to go to places I haven't been before.

Re: 2015 hot rod power tour announcement

There isn't a whole lot of rhyme or reason. They typically start where they ended the year before. A couple years ago it started in Dallas TX and ended in Charlotte, NC. Last year is started in Charlotte and ended in Wisconsin Dells, WI. Apparently they had a lot of issues with the last venue, so they chose to move it to Madison, WI this year. This year it will end in Baton Rouge, LA, so for 2016 it's likely it will start in Baton Rouge, and they don't typically go too far west of the Mississippi (due to the heat, and driving distances between stuff) SO it's likely 2016 will start in Baton Rouge and go east/northeast.

You got lucky! Those were the 2 best venues of the 2014 Hotrod traffic jam and overheating contest, AKA Power Tour. After the unexpected numbers this year (2014) I do hope the promoters and organizers picked some locations with better capacity and accessibility. We had a ball, did about 3500 miles, got the t-shirt and "long haul" sticker, took some great pictures, met some great people but have no plans on repeating it.

I wasn't "too lucky." My trans burned up. Thank God she somehow made it home. I knew it was toast so I tried it anyway. Made it the 4 hours home from Tennessee, went to move the car the next day and the trans was all but gone. Horrible burn smell. I wanted a 5 speed anyway!

My group hit some really bad traffic in TN going through the mountainous area right before that town they filmed footloose? in. Then, we hit a HUGE traffic jam only about an hour from the venue and we didn't make it there until 5 or so. My plan this year is to either stay "up the road" from all the stops and/or haul ass early in the morning. I have the most fun setting up a chair and watching the cars all roll in, that way I don't have to walk around and see 'em all

I see Andy about once a month at our truck club and I'm well aware of the traffic and venue issues (especially that snooty golf club), but Andy and a few other regular long haulers I've talked to say that's the worst they've ever seen it.

I think one of the biggest issues is the resurgance of the modern muscle car. I've never seen so many new Camaros/Mustangs/and Challengers (my God! the Challengers... there was sooooooo many of them!) in one place before. I think before people thought it was kind of hokey to putt along in the family whip if you're classic was still being restored or couldn't make it, so people didn't go at all, but since about 2010/11 with the return of the camaro/challenger, it seems like it's OK now for a couple thousand of those cars to tag along The small group I was in had a new Camaro, new-ish Corvette, and a fox body mustang. We also had my 65, andys 71, a really super cool 69 dodge monaco convertible (it's in the background of the pic I posted, AND it was owned by BO DUKE!), a 67/68 chevelle convertible and a 56 F100.

To be honest, if I feel the 65 isn't 100% ready to go 3,000 miles I'm stealing the wifes 2011 Mustang for the week. I'll be "one of those guys", but I think Shelby (my mustang) will be just fine.

...and finally (sorry for the essay) but I'm pretty sure I saw your truck at charlotte!

Re: 2015 hot rod power tour announcement

With all the stop and go, there's no way the truck would do better than 13mpg even with the 700R.

Even with ALL that crazy sitting and idling last year the mustang STILL averaged 17mpg over my whole trip without OD. I'm expecting 21/22mpg out of the car with the 5 speed. It will cost almost $300 more in gas to take the truck!

I was actually being nice in my earlier post! I edited yours down to cover the highlights of my experience. It was a JOKE! Literally the first (2) venues were the only ones that were not a CLUSTER! The promoters of the event dropped the ball, were not prepared and planned HORRIBLE venues and approaching routes that were not capable of handling the expected crowd much less the unexpected crowd. The only way to avoid the hours of traffic jams and lines of overheating cars was to leave out VERY early and get there quick and set up your chair and watch it all happen. That takes the fun out of it. As for my truck, I started the tour in my Model A, totaled it in a traffic accident approaching the W.V. traffic jam (venue), had my plan B delivered that night from Ga. and left out the next morning. I always wanted to do it, did it, had fun, went with about 5 other buds I don't get to see often and made the best of the whole thing but I will NEVER do it again as a "long hauler". I just hope to powers that be learned a lesson and corrected it for the upcoming tours.

This would be fun. I could easily do the Memphis, B'ham, ? , Baton Rouge part.
Now what to go in. They both are gas hogs (but what fun vehicle ain't)...
Blazer = cooler with no top, not rain friendly, max speed 55 better at 50.
Chevelle = black on black w no a/c, no radio.

Can't do a whole lot about the weather. If in the blazer. The Chevelle you can just speed up to cool down!

Re: 2015 hot rod power tour announcement

Awesome! I registered a month ago to make myself get ready/go. I said I was gonna go two years ago and didn't (I was gonna do the last couple legs and it rained over the whole southeast so I passed on going.)

I did two legs last year, just didn't have any vacation time, I started a new job. Had a blast and wanted to keep going.

This year I'm doing the whole thing. I'm taking my 65 Mustang but if for some reason I don't feel good about it (this is unlikely, I've put like 10K miles on it the last 3 years) I'll be taking my wife's 2011 Mustang.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: 2015 hot rod power tour announcement

Awesome! I'm starting on the car this weekend. I'm removing/resealing the intake along with cleaning up some parts. Once that's good to go I'm pulling the trans to replace the flywheel/clutch, then the last piece is to add the electric fan. I hope to be done by mid April for a good 5-6 weeks of shakedown time.

Re: 2015 hot rod power tour announcement

I spoke to a representative of HOTROD magazine. They fired or simply did not bring back the promoter of the past tours after last years HUGE, ridiculous, embarrassing mess. They have brought the tour in house. I have studied the venues and they seem to be more accessible and crowd friendly. Hopefully yall will have a great time!

Re: 2015 hot rod power tour announcement

Yeah "family events planning" is no longer the promoter.
