Starter issue

My r30 with 48000 miles sat for three years outside without usage by the previous owner. I took off the starter and bench tested it and it worked. I cleaned its body, the mounting point on the engine, cleaned all wires and terminals the put it back on. There is power from the battery. With clutch depressed and key turned to "on" position the is power to the the small terminal but starter not engaging or making any noise. Is this still a bad connection?

Re: Starter issue

Yes "start" position... Key turned all the way. The large terminal on the starter has the battery feed and a small red wire. The small terminal has a small red wire.

Re: Starter issue

ok. i know i did the wrong small term on one if the trucksi have and had the same problem. if you have power with the key in the start postion and still nothing try jumping it out with it in the truck if still nothing try useing jumper cables from the neg of batt to the starter. to check your ground fast and ez way to do it. i personaly like to run power and ground to my starters like on the big boys.

Re: Starter issue

OMG! I connected to the wrong small terminal! When I took off the starter I made sure to put the nut on the terminal it came off but at installation there was no but on the terminal I could see. Assuming it had come off .... You know the rest. Thanks

Re: Starter issue

hahaha i have done it myself like i said. i am starting to put plugs on the wires so they are longer to drop the starter and not have to fight with that wire. iknow we have all broke that wire at some point lol

Re: Starter issue

This truck hasn't been started for three years. It started today without hesitation. I ran it a minute. Should I drop the oil now or let it warm up to op temp then drop the oil?

Re: Starter issue

i liek to run them after draining a little to see what is in there first. menaing mettle. if all is good run it a few times with some slick 50 or the like just to help losen things up then change it out berforeyou start driving all the time. thats just me and prob over kill but its what i do. some just replace the oil right away.also cut the filter open if this is a new to you truck

Re: Starter issue

This truck was bought new by my father then sold to my son then now to me. It will not likely give me any surprises.

Re: Starter issue

A 10-lb sledge and some vented anger and the drum is off. Now just to make the brakes work , a couple shocks and I'll be on the road.
