Is it just me?

So in looking at tons of craigslist adds and pictures of 73-87 chevy trucks gathering Ideas for my 84 I've come to a conclusion and wonder if you guys agree?

Is it just me or are 73-87 chevy trucks a lot like air cooled VWs? In the sense that like VWs some one somewhere has chopped up or customized one into anything you can think of. You see them some rusty they're falling apart but sometimes you still see those ones going down the road. There isn't a day that goes by that you don't see at least one if not ten. Everybody has a memory of one.

But yet the same basic body style and truck can become so many different things. Everything from a full on slammed truck to a heavy load hualin SOB.

I've helped friends wrench on over 50 of these things, spent most of my teen years in the passenger seat of my buddies truck. I've had two k5s one 89 blazer one 78 jimmy, a 1991 suburban, and now my lowered 1984 shortbed. These things just have an allure I cant quite put my finger on.

What do you guys think?

They are cheap enough to buy,Have a huge aftermarket and your wallet is the only limit of what you can do to one.

I'm addicted to squarebodies. I look for them where ever I'm going and have even turned around to go back and check one out.

Re: Is it just me?

You are quite correct. I'm English but have lived here for 12 years and I quickly came to see the square body as the quintessential American truck. Only reason I didn't get one was that i need to be able to carry kids round too, so now I'm a K5 owner.

Re: Is it just me?

it's funny, I live in a relatively big town right near a major city and have lived here my whole life.......... there is only one GMC shortbox I see that rarely gets driven and a few K5 Blazers but that's about it. I rarely see any 81-87 Chevy trucks outside of the few I mentioned. I own an 82 K5 Blazer that will hopefully be finished next year and an 81 Chevy C-10 shortbox project I hope to have done in the next couple years. I can't wait to ride in one of the few in my town !!!!

Ha ha. My wife went to walmart the other day and I told her I would give her $1 for every pic of a squarebody she send me. I paid her $3 when she got home. 2 of the 3 I had seen before. ha ha ha ha ha ha..........

Wow! The small town I live in has around 5000 in population. I have seen at least a dozen 81-87 short bed squares, 5-6 long beds and a few 73-80. I also know the location of a few non running abandoned squares.

Re: Is it just me?

Same here I live in a rural area and on my daily commute I see a lot of beaters. Not very often I see a nice one but I do see them. 4x4s on the other hand are a different story. They're everywhere. I know of about 20 or so different projects that could be had in various states of condition. I still see about an even split of 73-80 and 81-87 in my area. I've got the only shortbed in town. There are about 15 in my small town though. I have one and my buddy has 3.

On the 4x4s i see its super nice or total rust bucket nothing in the middle.I do see a lot of 80s work trucks gm and ford but almost never see a older dodge here which is odd to me.

Re: Is it just me?

On my 70 mile trip yesterday I saw 5 squares, including one that has obviously been parked in the same spot for a few years that I could not see in my normal direction of travel.

On CL right now there are at least 10 for sale within an hour's drive, everything from a lowered resto to a spoilered dressed with custom paint to lifted stripped mudder to plow trucks to burb's, C10 to K35, 73 to 91. When Keith needed a door for Red there were at least 5 available within a 2 hour drive. Gotta love them.
