Hypothetical Question about Rockers/Cab Corners

Hypothetically speaking here of coarse...
If a 67-72 cab needed Rockers, Rocker Panel Backing Plates and Cab Corners on both sides.
Assuming no other body work was needed (there is the hypothetical part) what should a guy expect to have to pay for these items to be put on and put on right. Obviously just in primer or ready for primer or at whatever point is normal here.
Obviously there are geographical price differences and whether a guy is doing quality work out of his garage or crappy work out of a legitimate body shop business. But, I am just trying to get an idea as to what this amount of work costs.
Whether its a $300.00 or added $1000.00 when looking at a cab that needs these things.
My reason is... every cab I have ever seen, bought, have or heard of... all need rockers and cab corners at least. Whether its a pin hole or a completely rusted rocker, they both need replacing. So I am just trying to get some sort of ball park idea of the cost of this repair. Obviously the more additional body work the cab would need the more it would cost.

What are you thoughts and estimates?

I'm in the Kansas City area. I found a guy on Craigslist that was looking to do some work at home. His day job was at a high-end car dealership.

I provided the rockers and cab corners (from GMC Paul) and he welded them in, finished and and primed for $600.

Shop around and ask body shop people in your area what they charge.

$2500 is way too much. I would think between $600-800 would be a fair price for a job done right (with you providing the parts).

The guy that does ours is very good and charges about $800 to get a cab in primer. We provide the metal.

As you have found out, there is no standard price, numbers will be all over the place...just like a paint job

I needed a better "all over the place" than $600-$2500
I wasn't looking for standardized pricing... it appears that $600-$800 so far is the ball park price.

I had the last two feet of the outer rocker replaced on my 00 Z71 recently from some rust (truck spent first 5 years of life in Indy). The old one was cut out, new welded in, bodywork, and they blended the paint up to the bodyline for $250. Really good shop too, they fix my deer strike damage about a year ago.

$2500 is ridiculous. $600 is not bad.

I just figure on cab corners, rockers and cab supports on every one I build. I would charge around $300 per side labor if the cab was bare when I got it. If I had to pull parts the price goes up.

i know i am from the uk. But $600 seem awfully cheap , if you workout the time involved to do the work, and take it from there. Invariably the door posts will be rotten, and the outriggers which fit the inner rockers. so it becomes a much bigger job, has the floor got to be repaired? etc etc So all in all depends on what actually needs doing, as it may be more than just rockers and cab corners.
The corners also do not fit properly and if these are seem welded then again that addd to the time involved.
I am reconstructing the floor in mine as the PO just riveted the inner fenders together and filled the floor with bondo . that may be a $600 job????????.

a friend is welding mine in for me. (91gmc) he said 2-$300. i have fenders removed except 2 bolts and hood and box off. i will finish them. so 600 is a good price. BUT there is a wrong way and a right way to do them.

Unless the fenders are off, it's hard to see how bad it is under that area.
I'd want to see similar metalwork in progress on another vehicle. I'd also want to see my cab at several stages in the process and see the final result before primer.
Are they butt welding areas that were just a single piece of metal before? Sure lap welding is easier, but I'll see it under there.
With MIG welding, you add a lot of material that has to be removed later. This is slow and it's easy to add heat and pressure grinding. This can warp the metal and if not done carefully thing the new metal.

Price is a small part of the job...
Agreeing what will be done, how, and to what quality is important.
There's more than one post on this site about people finding new rockers were laid over old ones.

Body labor is broken down into flat rate hours. The outer rocker on a 2 door pickup would be about 4.5 hrs flat rate. The inner rocker (with outer removed) adds about 2.0 hrs. The entire cab corner replacement would be approx. 6.0 hrs. with rocker removed or as an adjacent panel. 8.5 hrs. as a stand alone operation which would include removal of back glass and set back bed.

So, I would figure about 1/3 of the cab corner needs replaced for a total of 2.0 added to the 6.5 for the inner and outer rockers. total 8.5 hrs. per side.

Now, that said, these times include the removal of the seats, carpet pull back and pull the fender. It would also likely include removing sill plate, seat belt and other attached items, excepting the fuel tank if it's behind the seat. These rates obviously do not include hidden damage which may be found once these panels are opened up nor any painting after repairs/replacements have been made

So, depending on how many of these items you will remove yourself and the prevailing labor rate in your area you should be able to figure out what a fair cost should be.
