66 gmc 4000
So I have picked up a 66 GMC 4000. Long story short I am actually wanting to convert this to a more modern drivetrain to be able to use it as a car hauler for long distances and feel safe in doing so. Plan is to make it a ramp truck, not a rollback and possibly pull a trailer. I see 1 ton duallys all the time lately pulling ramp trailers with 3 cars ect so I figured using a 1 ton rear axle and maybe front end components would be the way to go. Thoughts?

Just remember the wheel openings are larger for the 20'' rims these trucks came with, most 1 ton rears are 8 lug and will only offer you smaller wheel choices. I would look into the GM 3500HD axles, you get disc brakes, 19.5 wheels, and will accept the 5/10 lug 20" wheels you already have.

Nice truck.
Like the nice sheet metal. If the "GMC" letters are original to the truck, it is not a '66, but a '64 or '65. Can't help much on the modifications. If it were mine, I would be keeping it original, but either change the Rear Gears or possibly swap it to a more hiway-friendly 2-Ton Rear. Or, check into a Brown-Lipe Aux Trans with an Overdrive. I actually thought the same thing but was unsure if the same applied to the big trucks when it came to the GMC lettering.
I doubt it will stay original drivetrain wise. The main reason I picked it up because I have always thought about having a ramp truck of the same time period as my suburban. I really wasn't ready for this yet but for the price I could not pass it up. |

You could find a late model C4500 or C5500 and pull the drivetrain. Might get lucky and find a Duramax truck!!

I see the perfect donor in the background. Gotta go medium duty in my book. Maybe you can buy a 1t and haul like that, but if you're going to build it, build it right. Just put the cab on the newer frame
