So Frustrated
Hey guys need to vent here, and maybe get some good ideas...me and my dad got a friend to look at the truck today and he said he could finish the body work/ prime/paint for 28 hundred bucks...which is a sweet deal cause he does awesome work. the only thing is right now im layed off and i dont have any $ coming in right now. this is just poor timing cause if i had been working these last 4 weeks id have the money no sweat but i havent been working so im hooped....i should be back to work in sept when it gets busy again but that doesnt help either...the guy said to bring the truck to his shop in 2 weeks and it would take him a week to do it. so say the truck is done in a month for safe measures that would mean that id have about 4 weeks to come up with a couple grand at least...and i dont wanna even ask my parents cause i was raised to work for what is mine...i guess i cant do much but start working and save my money, i just wish there was a way to come up with some money quick, id seriously do anything.....geeeeeeez i wanna pull my hair out...thanks for letting me vent

Derek, you have any pics of your project? Have you got your pickup tore down or you letting the body shop do that?
when I was low on money I did a lot of the grunt work myself, since I had more time then money. I learned a few things along the way that helped me to slowly start my projects from the frame up.

One good thing about a good paying steady job is I always have plenty of credit available anytime. It's nice to be able to lay your hands on a bunch of green when you need it. It's pretty hard to get credit lines without a steady job though. Sorry, as always, I'm of little help. I will say one thing. Your parents may not be as tough about it if you come up with a plan to pay them back that is specific. I once needed to borrow money from my mother. She lent it to me without asking much because she knew how hard it was for me to ask.

well, jobs are ok to help with money, but sometimes they aren't enough. especially my stupid one. right now, i worked all summer and saved, and i had just enough to pay my tuition. now i have to keep workin to pay for books and parking passes, and gas. i have no money left for my truck! it sucks.
i think that when i get to the stage that you are at, I will do bodywork, prep, and paint myself to cut costs a little, but also to learn how to do it.

well summer is mostly over anyway, so you might as well just take him the truck during the winter and tell him to take his time on it and make sure it is all done right. hten you can have the rest of the winter to put it back together and have it ready for spring

I hear you CST; we just had another huge layoff here at IBM, the third in 2 years. The first let go 700, the second fired 1000, then this one was 600. We've been decimated, but I'm still here. Almost worse than being laid off is the constant threat of it. Granted, there's no cash coming in, but you have everything laid out and you know what you need to do in order to make ends meet. Here, I'm in a position where I don' want to spend anything because I could be out the door tomorrow. Makes it tough to get married, start a family, build a house. You aren't alone my friend.

I did this a long time ago, but I helped defray some of my costs by working it off for the body shop. Lots of dirty crappy stuff, cleaning trash, stocking. He may not, but it couldn't hurt. I know it wasn't a great exhange rate either, but it got me what I wanted and I was willing to do the Sh-- so my car got painted.
But yeah I think there is always a shortage somewhere or something that delays getting our projects done, of which most of us know time and money are the big 2 delays.

well you could always get all grubby looking and go sit out on the corner with a sighn that says homeless need help....
Hey I am not kidding, there is a guy here in salinas, he sits out on the same corner everyday. him and his dog blue. Last week I saw him and blue in a brand new chevy truck. He looked totally differant, all fixed up. I asked him what he was doing with the truck he said it was his. I asked him why he sat on the corner saying he was home less ? He said can you find an easyer job? He told me he gets like $100, a day, a good day brings $250-$350. I was totally thinking about doing it. just an idea...

Well, you could always offer to trade him labor. Find out if there's stuff he's got going on that you could help or do to reimburse him for his work! If he's open-minded, and you've got some skills he doesn't have then maybe you could work things out without worrying about money...
...just an idea.

67cst,
If he would do my truck for that price.....I'd grab it. My wife works at an autobody shop and her companys cost on my paint was $ 1100.00. I spent another 500 in primer. I'm installing an ac system in the painters house for spraying my truck. I did all the body work myself. |
