Junkyard rescue

I'm new to this forum and these trucks. I am a fabricator/metal shaper. I hope to learn more about these trucks as I plan to rescue this orange 1970 C20 from the crusher. It appears to be original and complete. Looks like only the wiring and heater box were messed with.

My plan is to get it running and fix it mechanically. Then bump the sheet metal to fix some of the larger damage. Then just use it and enjoy driving it as it tells its own history.

Re: Junkyard rescue

Looks solid but I would look for rust issues in the upper windshield area. Rockers and back bed have a tendency to develp rust. Good luck.

Oh yes ...

to the forums and from Ohio.

Re: Junkyard rescue

I paid $600. It may not be worth it, but I wanted to save it from the crusher in January. The more I looked at the truck sitting there in the weeds, the more I fell in love with its style. It is a father and son project now.

It has a straight 6-cylinder. Maybe a 250cid? And a 4-speed. It has the original bench in the bed and the original wheels and tires.

Re: Junkyard rescue

I'd say you did pretty good at 600. I bought a semi parted 72 Cheyenne with no motor, trans, or bed for that much 6 months ago. I was much the same. Wanted to save it from the crusher. I'm comfortable with what I payed and I think you did fine.

Re: Junkyard rescue

Welcome to the site. You did fine at $600.00. If you parted it out, you would get more than that. Good deal. Can't wait to see your progress pics.

Re: Junkyard rescue

Nice save. 600 doesn't buy much in the way of entertainment anymore so i think you did great.

Re: Junkyard rescue

Thanks for the good words and welcome. We finally got the truck dug out of the weeds and home. The rockers and cab corners are rusted away, but the bed and front sheet metal are solid.

Re: Junkyard rescue

The junkyard I got the truck from leaves the keys in them. Someone took the keys for some reason. I ordered a new ignition switch and lock set from Classic parts. Once I get those parts, I will go through the motor to get it running.

$600? You did well, very well. The seat in the picture is not original to that truck, it appears to be an 88'-98" chev/gmc pickup seat. Actually, that is a preferred seat for that cab, IMO, and I plan on using one in my 68 SWB project.

I like your plan, drive it and let it tell it's story. Along the way patch up the metal then finish the body.

If you ever plan on ditching the manual trans in the future: when/if the front clip is off remove the bell housing cross-member rivets and replace them with bolts so you can get it out later after the truck is re-assembled. That would also be a good time to replace body mounts and rad support mounts.

Before you shell out any $ on the heater problems, consider an aftermarket heater/ac system if you desire ac.

Great father/son project. Learn him to drive on a stick shift it builds character.

That's an awesome save there, and a great deal, but where can we see more pics of the COE from you photo bucket?

Re: Junkyard rescue

I got the new ignition and keys from classic parts installed. Charged the battery and put some gas in the tank. It fired up after a minute of cranking. It has good oil pressure, but run like ****. I need to get it running good before I fix anything else.
