Learn as I go...

I'm working on a 67 Chevy truck that i got a good deal on. It hasn't been run since 93 based on the tag decal. I was able to get the engine running, so now I'm working on the brakes. I think eventually I'll do a conversion to disc, but right now I just trying to get this girl back on asphalt. So, I'm curious if I need to replace the metal brake lines, or will the lines I have be ok? The outside is rusty, but I didn't know if the inside is good. I've already bought a new master cylinder, wheel cylinders, & new hoses. So, will I be ok with the old lines, or should I go ahead & spring for the new lines. Also, what about the proportion valve? Thanks guys.

You should thoroughly, and I mean THOROUGHLY ,visually inspect the lines for any pitting or severe rust. There could be a hole in one on the backside where it is up against the frame.Considering the age,and the fact you said they were rusty, if it was me I would replace for peace of mind.

I hate telling someone to spend money but those are your breaks, you know sooner or later you'll probably want to changed those old ugly lines out anyway, go ahead with the new lines you need to bleed the thing out anyway, as for the valve, see how it looks after a good flushing out.

Re: Learn as I go...

I had the same issue and replaced everything except the proportion valve. There are pretty good stainless, pre-bent brake lines on the market. Definitely worth it.
