Some infos for '70 C20
Hey there,
i want to build up my 1970 Chevy C20 pickup but i have a few questions regarding some options. There were no mirrors mounted when I bought the car and the service-part-identification card says it is "D29 - R/V MIRROR-JR-L & R" equipped. Which mirrors do I have to use to match the originals? It is the longhorn model with 133" wheelbase but there are no longhorn-emblems mounted and there are no holes near the rear side marker lamps - was it an option to have those emblems? Thanks, Dan |

Re: Some infos for '70 C20
The bed mounted Longhorn emblems were included on the Longhorn Chevys. I've heard they were not on the GMCs. The 1970 D29 mirrors were the painted version of the stainless DG4 mirrors shown below.
And... welcome to the board!!! Jim |

Thank you!
There is a GMC tailgate mounted so perhaps the entire bed was changed - this could explain why the emblems are missing. I'll post some pics tomorrow. |

Re: Some infos for '70 C20
This is my service-identification-card:
Was the radio speaker always mounted in the middle behind the dashpad? Because I have speakers in the doors but I don't think that this is original. The truck is equipped with the rear sliding window and there are plenty little holes around it. What are they for? Not original? It looks like there are holes so you could mount triangular seat belts. Is that possible? Because there are two bolt belts mounted at the moment and I think they are the original ones. Was the chrome window trim an option? Is it possible to get dimensions where the longhorn-emblems have to be placed? Thanks, Dan Last edited by uscarsgermany; 01-04-2015 at 08:32 AM. |

The speaker is in dash on trucks from factory, holes look like someone had a curtain or something hung there!?!, shoulder belts were an option but should show on spid, no measurements but factory assem. Pic. , maybe an inside access hole to go off? Or marker light

Re: Some infos for '70 C20
Thank you!
This is going to be a complete rebuild. I want to make it as original as it could be except of lifting it a little bit. I already have the frame lift kit but i want to lift suspension as well. But it's pretty hard to find a suspension lift kit for RWD with coils in front. All kits I've seen so far are for AWD with leafs in the front. |

Re: Some infos for '70 C20
That truck most likely had a camper mounted on it. If so, the holes around the rear window are probably for a boot that connected with the front camper window to allow direct access to the camper from the cab. Quite common back then.
Not sure what you are referring to about the chrome window trim. The high trim level trucks did have stainless trim around the windshield and rear window as well as chrome around the vent windows as you can see in the picture I posted in post 2.. |

Re: Some infos for '70 C20
The truck has no stainless trim around the windows and I just wondered - nearly every truck I saw online had stainless window trim - if every truck came with it or if it was an option to choose. Because my identification card says nothing about trim and I don't want to put it on if it wasn't originally equipped with it.

Re: Some infos for '70 C20
Your truck is an unusually well equipped truck for a base model. However, since it is a base model, it would not have had the chrome around the vent windows and stainless around the windshield and back window. The trim was not available as a standalone option.

Ok and available were base and custom? So base model means less chrome - painted bumpers, no chrome around the instrument panel? Is the interior different as well? My truck has blue trim. Blue vinyl seat, the door panels are painted blue and there is no vinyl at the door but I saw that you can buy vinyl door panels.

Re: Some infos for '70 C20
The available 1970 trim levels were Base, Custom and Custom Sport Truck (CST). Yours is base and would be equipped as you describe plus what's on the SPID. The Customs would have the lower molding with black center (on your SPID as an option), windshield and vent window stainless, cigar lighter, bright trim on the control knobs on the dash, color-keyed floor mat, a "Custom/20" fender emblem, vinyl door panels, fabric upholstery, a full-depth foam seat and special insulation. In addition, CST added chrome front bumper, headliner, cargo light, deluxe vinyl upholstery, carpeting, door operated dome light, deluxe side marker lights, a CST fender emblem and wood grain applique on the lower body molding. There are also a couple minor touches added to the Custom and CST such as a chrome border on the dome light and "Custom" or "CST" emblems on the glove box door. I'm not sure why your instrument cluster is all black. Perhaps it's been painted.
Here's a link that will answer many of your questions. https://gmheritagecenter.com/docs/gm...olet-Truck.pdf Last edited by FirstOwner69; 01-04-2015 at 08:12 PM. |

Re: Some infos for '70 C20
I have a door operated dome light. It's not working at the moment but I have the dome light and door switches installed. Did the wooden bed came with it originally? Because I've heard that is was an option but my truck is equipped with it and it's not listed on the SPID. The lower body molding matches the blue interior color.
As I want it to stay very original when rebuilt, I'll go with the same white paint, but as I'd like to have two tone I'll foil-coat some areas. I definitely want some chrome, so I'll go with chrome mirrors, bumpers and rims. And I want it to be slightly higher, that's why I will install a body lift kit. Interior will be very original as well, except of color-matched carpeting. I already bought the headliner but I won't install it now. |

Re: Some infos for '70 C20
If I understand correctly, all Longhorns had wood beds. Therefore, it would not be listed as an option on the SPID.

Re: Some infos for '70 C20
I have a 1969 C 20 Longhorn and it did not come with the Longhorn emblems at the back of the bed. I have also wondered why?
Maybe a top line cab option before those were installed?
