how to detect what year chassis you have?

Hey guys,

I am usually over at the 47-59 section cause my cab is a 50. I was told it is sitting on a 72 chassis.

I would like to buy drop spindles but am told that 71+72 are different cause the ball joints are different sizes.

I have 4 wheel drum on 6 lug axles, coil springs in the rear, no leaf.

What is the best way to determine the year?

I did notice some numbers stamped on the pass. outer frame rail. not sure if that will help any.

thanks in advance for any help in this matter.

Brian

A partial VIN may be stamped atop on the LH frame rail just posterior from where the steering box is attached. That # may also be helpful - post both if possible.

I am no expert but sounds like it would be a 67-70 frame if it is drums all around there also should be a Vin stamped in frame buy steering box on drivers side.

Re: how to detect what year chassis you have?

I would say 63-70 being that you have 4 wheel drum and 6 lug hubs. 71-72 is 5 lug and disk brake front. Not sure how to tell exact year model but maybe somebody else will chime in.

Re: how to detect what year chassis you have?

Also look to see if there is a dumple where a power steering box would cradle. If theres a dimple then its most likely a 68-70
No dimple most likely means 64-67
You have coil springs in the front right?

Re: how to detect what year chassis you have?

Yes
coils in the front.

Not sure dimple?

Has manual steering box no power.

Sure is a lot a work to get to the bottom of this situation.

But I appreciate all the help!

Brian

Re: how to detect what year chassis you have?

Couldn't find anything near the steering box. The numbers on pass. Side are;
3935802-464
5. 7. -17

I also found 464 stamped on the frame in other areas.

Not sure if it helps but here is a pic of steering box.

Thanks
Brian

Re: how to detect what year chassis you have?

That part number is listed on this thread here for a 68 frame: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=270463

Some GMC frames do not have VINs stamped on them...
