More gas tank revisitied
So far the two options on '67-'72 gas tanks is to live with it or move it. I choose to live with it and have for 39 years. But, I would like to hear a discussion from some folks using the stock installation who have figured out how not to spill gas in right hand turns, ruin paint jobs, and create the gas fume issue. Of course the quick answer is don't fill the tank up, but has anyone tried installing any baffling, better seals, designed or found a better cap, ....or something? Thanks.

Re: More gas tank revisitied
A quality gas cap and seal on the sender yields no gas smell and no leaks. If it's an ecc tank replace the vent hose as well. I have seen people cut and use thicker rubber on gas caps. Thickness is usually trial and error depending on gas cap and what you currently have.

Re: More gas tank revisitied
Stock non-vented gas cap on a 71, no leaks when turning.

Re: More gas tank revisitied
Have to agree with lefty, if all the rubber hoses, sender o-ring, and gas cap seal are fresh there will be no fumes in the cab and no cap leakage on turns. I have seen instances where the neck is worn to the point that the cap would not tighten down and or continued to spin.

Re: More gas tank revisitied
I too have no fumes and no spills. I used to have fumes before I replaced the fuel tank with holes rusted through the top.

If you want to go budget, go with some of this stuff for a gasket: Viton is a brand of synthetic rubber and fluoropolymer elastomer commonly used in O-rings and other molded or extruded goods. The name is a registered trademark of DuPont Performance Elastomers L.L.C. Last edited by twouvakind; 01-07-2015 at 10:38 PM. Reason: More info |

Re: More gas tank revisitied
All great ideas. Thanks for the responses. Trucks at the paint shop now, but will get a new cap and add some seals.
