What's involved in bringing an older truck into Canada from the U.S.

As I understand it if you have a vehicle that qualifies as a classic car and you have a clear title you can bring it into Canada. Is this correct?

Another question, what about if I just brought a cab back, does it need a title to take it across the border?

Final question, does any body know of a person or company that will transport a non-functional vehicle from the U.S. into Canada? Previously I tried to bring a non-functional vehicle from BC to Ontario and none of the companies I contacted wanted to touch it.

Thanks,
Ron

You need to have the ownership at the Border 72 hours prior to crossing with the vehicle.

That's the only thin I know.

Did some digging around and found the site at Canada Customs that described the whole process. Like anything with alot of paperwork it sounds intimidating and probably quite tedious. The link is Canada Customs Vehicle importing.

If the metal is more then 15 years old I think then there isnt a problem with titles, I just brought back 2 bodys with vin plates on them and they didnt even look in the trailer, paid my $50 in taxes and was on my way.

I bought my truck in Texas and drove it home. They just asked for the bill of sale at the border. Made up a sheet so I could get insurance, paid my GST on the purchase price, and that was it.

In & out in 15 mins.

No problems at all.

Cool, now I just have to find a place to rent a pickup and trailer to go and pick up the truck.

Thanks!

Dont forget you will need a vehicle inspection before you can drive it. Make sure to have a receipt too. If they give you a hard time you will want a receipt and the guy you bought it froms phone #.

You may want to consider trying to entertain the seller with the thought of writing up a receipt for significantly less then what you pay for it, it will help your wallet at the border and maybe when you go to register it.

YUP! Thats what I did.

Also, like stated above, be sure to have a detailed receipt with the make, model, serial number and the sellers complete address, and PHONE NUMBER!

info

If you are bringing back a complete vehicle ask the seller for a copy of the title so you can leave it with US Customs on your way down. The clock starts ticking the minute they have the copy of the title and untill it is there for exactly 72 hours they won't stamp your paperwork which you need for Canada Customs. You can get a away with a phot copy or even a fax as long as it is clear. Don't worry about the Provincial inspectons, they aren't that bad. Can't have any rust holes bigger than a quarter on the outside though, and no serious oil leaks. If you need any more info you can contact me. I bring back several 67-72 trucks a year and have the process down now.

Are you sure about this 72 hour thing?

If its true maybe its in place so that they make sure you have enough time to go as far south as possible to get the good stuff :P

From what I read on the Customs website the 72 hour thing is required. I also spoke to Bill (from Bill's Truck Parts) and he confirmed that the 72 hour thing is also required, basically he said that it doesn't matter if it only takes them an hour to handle what they need too with the title, the title has to be there a minimum of 72 hours beforehand. From what else he said it appears that they don't budge on that requirement.

The good news on that front was that Bill said he never had a vehicle refused at the border, I assume that was because he followed the 72 hour requirement.

I just drove across the border with the truck I bought. Title & bill of sale in hand.

No 72 hour notice here.

No problems at all. In-and-out in 15 mins.
