rodchester 4 barrell carb leaking gas

Fuel is welling up out of the carb where the shaft enters the top of the carb. Sorry I dont know the name of that component so I posted a pic. When you step on the acceleratetor the plunger goes down and then back up when you take your foot off the acceleratetor. At that point the engine dies and fuel wells up out of that area. Truck will run great at high rpm but will not idle.

New carb required?

I dont know much about carbs so any help is appreciated.

Paul

That plunger is the accelerator pump.

Fuel leaking out of that area means you have needle/seat or float problems. Probably just need to open up the carb and clean some dirt/debris out of the needle & seat. And check to make sure the float isn't sunk.

Ok, thank you. At least now I can identify the part. Could it be that what ever that shaft pushes down on inside the carb is sticking?

Is it difficult to take that part off the carb and service it?

Do you think the carb could be the origional from 45 years ago?

If yes, I probabably should replace it right?

thank you

That shaft pushes down on a plunger with a cup type seal. They usually don't stick, but the cup seals on the accelerator pumps can get bad. They won't cause an external fuel leak. Instead, they simply won't squirt gas out through the nozzles like they're supposed to.

Not real hard. You have to use a small drift punch to drive the little roll pin in so you can remove the "rocker arm" type linkage from the accelerator pump. Then unhook the internal choke linkage rod. And take out several screws to remove the top of the carb.

But if you're not familiar with carburetors, you might want to check around with some repair shops in your area to find someone that is used to working on them.

It could very well be original ... you'd have to look up the numbers stamped on the side.

I wouldn't just replace it because it's old though. When rebuilt properly, the Rochester Quadrajet is an excellent carburetor. And if you do have it rebuilt, I'd recommend having it done by a professional rather than buying a generic parts store rebuilt carb.

However, it might not need a full rebuild. As I said earlier, it might simply be some dirt/debris stuck in the needle & seat that's causing it to flood.
