pickin your seats

My fuel filter tells me its time to pull my gas tank for a cleaning or replacement . Thought while I was at it I might look into an updated seat . A split bench would be nice . What's your experience? Major hassle or not
Thanks George

I've never dabbled in seat replacement, but a lot of folks seem to slide in late model (88-up) Chevy / GMC seats. I've heard they're about the same height and reach from the wheel. I'd think the worst you'd have to do is build an adapter out of some 1/2-3/4" steel with factory holes, the drill and tap holes for the new seat to bolt to. I'm sure someone else will provide more info as we go on....

I have a splint bench from a 94 in mine and it's pretty straight forward. Before this I had a straight bench with fold down armrest from a 90. Personally if I ever did it again, I would go with the straight bench. Both are just as comfortable, but since I can't really take advantage of the splint bench, theregular seat is a far simpler swap...and typically more plentiful than the splint bench seats.
You can look at my web site and see what I did for moutning mine.

I am installing seats from a 98 Dodge Ram. They have a fold down armrest/console and high back buckets. They are the same as these

I PUT A SET OF BUCKETS OUT OF A MID 70S JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE IN MY TOW TRUCK. I BROKE MY BACK ABOUT 25 YEARS AGO, & JUST CAN'T USE THE ORIGINAL BENCH SEATS. I REPLACE THE BENCH SEAT IN EVERY TRUCK I BUILD. (I FLEW DOWN TO SO. CAL. TO PICK UP MY TOW TRUCK, DROVE IT 550 MILES HOME, & COULD BARELY WALK THE NEXT DAY) THEY AREN'T HIGH BACK (SO THEY DON'T STICK WAY UP IN THE BACK WINDOW) HAVE LUMBAR SUPPORTS, & ARE THE MOST COMFORTABLE SEATS I'VE OWNED. I BOLTED THEM UP TO OEM PICKUP SLIDES & RISER (PASS SIDE)

junkyardjohn, I know what ya mean about the bench seats. I've had back trouble for years and it hasn't gotten any betterv since I started driving my '67 regularly. I NEED to get some good seats put in.

Everybody, keep those seat suggestions coming!

THIS IS A SEAT OUT OF A 94 MAZDA (CAR). IT SEEMS THEY ARE ALWAYS THE WRONG COLOR, SO I ALWAYS HAVE TO GET THE REUPOHLSTERD. CLIMB INTO A BUNCH OF WRECKED CARS AT THE JUNKYARD, & FIND ONE THAT REALLY FEELS GOOD & FITS YOU, & WORRY ABOUT MOUNTING IT LATER.

i have a pair of buckets from a 92 240sx that i'm gonna use eventually. they're a hella nice racing style seat. i dont particularly care for the 90's chevy seats. i've driven a 97 or so and didn't like them at all. they felt too hard.

Junkyardjohn Now that sounds way too logical for me Try before you buy Good idea Course I went to the yard yesterday looking for an air cleaner and got stung by a bee With my luck the first seat I sat on would have a hornets nest in it
Thanks again George

I already installed the seats out of a 96 Dodge Ram with those 40/20/40 seats. It originally had a bench that I had to shove wood under to try and fix it. Once I had a bit of $$$ I went to the wrecker and picked it up. I just had to mek some spacers for the rear, but they do sit a bit high. Once I change my steering coloumn( tilt) and get the power steering I will re-evaluate the height of the seats.

I will try and get some pics of what I did.

just 4 holes

All I had to do to mount my Silverado bench was drill 4 holes. A much more comfortable seat - no more back aches from driving!

I am going to cut the 2 front and middle supports down so it will sit 3 " lower that they do now, then make up a spacer for the rear bracket. The Dodge seats, sit 6" higher than the stock bench, I made sure to measure that

I was thinking the same, cutting the front brackets down low enough and not need spacers in the rear, but I will play around with it first before I cut it down. They are quite comfortable seats and I like the fact of the huge center console.

Yes it's color code 462, white and medium bronze ,when I get it painted it will probably be the same color. The 60/40 seat is tan.

I got mine for free. A guy was throwing them out of his pick up at the dump, so I asked why and he didn't think they were worth selling. He replaced them with some heated leather lumbar buckets . But you should be able to find a used set for about $300 or less
