1966 saddle gold /off white code 555 crossover

Well all the pictures and talking to paint rep and even trying to color match several new take off pieces this is what we shot last night on the 66 shortbox project. This is PPG paints crossover color for the saddle metallic and the off white paint code 555 for 1966. I honestly think it is way more glamour color than the old gothic gold color that the original survivor trucks are now. Every nos piece we played with don't even match as I have found red primer on new take off mirror brackets and mainly black primer/sealer under most of the tailgates. Even sprayed the clear on one of the original take off mirror arms and wow you have a rich glamour clear shiny new paint going to say far superior than any factory applied paint of the era. So we mixed a pint of the original gold metallic paint code straight off the PPG reformulated crossover code and this is what we got and spraying over black sealer to darken the base color as much as possible. Gives me some time now wiring it and installing glass and cab on the frame to decide if that is that is what we settle on or do some more tinting or searching paint before outside is painted. Anyone else been down this road have any suggestions for an original match? The problem is the clearcoats today just put so much shine to what was originally just basically a semi flat factory finish that just got duller every month there after.

PPG has flatting additive. You could make it any sheen you want.

What did you use on your turquoise truck and maybe I'm just getting to picky to not over restore it as my truck is very close to original in most areas but yet still has some updates in others.

Yeah, way to shiny so you need to repaint it another color, because that's what color I want to paint mine.

Re: 1966 saddle gold /off white code 555 crossover

Although I will not be doing a full restoration, I will be painting the inside of my cab as the PO primered the entire thing. I like how that color turned out. I do like the thought of a little luster in the cab. Not flat, not gloss, maybe satin? It is a way down the road however and I will be interested to see what you finally decide. Maybe I can even see it in person since you are only about an hour from me.

Re: 1966 saddle gold /off white code 555 crossover

I'll post some interior color pictures next week as I also used 2 other of PPG's reformulated crossover base colors and clear over both the inside cab and floor in and out with about 40% flat clear and then the dash color was almost totally flat clear. Looked very close to the back of the original glove box door for color and sheen. The outside will stay primer for a while as I will be installing on frame and hooking up electrical and steering column/brakes next. Then starting the long process of restoring the factory air and yet upgrading to some new fittings with O ring seals to the original ac lines and with correct Parker hoses under the hood. Here is a shot of the dusty restored chassis that has been waiting for about a year for the body to come back home.

Took a shot of my collection of NOS 66 caps to go on the new gold color wheels with whitewalls.
And what I started out with in hand to build a truck around is my super rare find a Nebraska 1966 farm plate from 66 county and 327. All registered with the state of Nebraska for this pickup.

Looking good is that a HEI in there? That farm plate was a great find. These trucks don't look right without original plates. My 65 C20 & 66 C10 have their original plates.

Thanks and Yes hei. HEI composed of NOS GM parts. Used 75 Corvette 8MM wire set to go in original brackets. Also had to raise the original 4 barrel air cleaner 1/2 by cutting a piece of PVC pipe and bonding it to the bottom of air cleaner before painting it black. Looks like factory. It also has dual exhaust and tucked up in the frame but with later model GM factory hangars on the box section. Dual exhaust not an option that year but this truck has correct size pipes and a mirror of the LH side. This was my goal at the Lambrecht Auction was to photograph factory original parts and the factory exhaust systems in place and I duplicated the tailpipe from the 65 283 V8 pickup with exact bends and tailpipe cutoff.

Love that mixing new GM parts and old shapes makes for a great driver truck. I have a few air cleaner decals # 6420904 (327) Fremont if it will fit application.

Re: 1966 saddle gold /off white code 555 crossover

These factory exhaust photos might end up being even more priceless as that last eBay Lambrecht 8 mile blue 64 truck that sold had an all new exhaust system installed. These factory pipes are pretty rough cut and of course they were just steel pipes. I did notice on some of the new 64-65 trucks they had what looked like flat black paint on the end of the tailpipe.

I noticed on many of those trucks it was like the entire underside was painted once it was assembled. The mufflers are painted also painted black . This is the red 292 truck that showed up late.
