Seatbelts?

Hello, all!

My '74 GMC Standard Cab is my daily driver, and it features lap-belts.

While I dig the clean look of an uncluttered cab, I like being alive and feel that some shoulder belts would be in my best interest.

From what I can see, it looks like a case of finding the appropriate color (in my case, Golden Brown/Saddle) from a donor truck, and bolting them in.

Am I correct, or is there something I need to know? Are shoulder-belts the same in all years of squares? Any other years/models that will work?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Seatbelts?

I have a 74 cab and it h ad shoulder belts standard I f you add them and there is no bolt hole you should probably weld in a section of a inner b panel to make it real safe

Re: Seatbelts?

There are existing threaded bolt-holes on the door-pillars with a plastic cap over them.

From what I can learn by searching around here, shoulder-belts were a dealer-option in '74.

Just wondering mainly how interchangable the later factory shoulder-belts are?

Or, is there a reasonable aftermarket source anyone has used?.

My interior is just about perfect, and I'd like to keep it as close to stock as possible

Re: Seatbelts?

Confirmed again my 76 has the threaded hole in the pillar as well.
My Dad had some later model should belts in it for quite a while. (before I probably not so smartly removed them for some chrome latch lap belts)

Re: Seatbelts?

Around 360k miles mine had worn to shreds. I found some good ones on Ebay. If you can find some in a similar truck, then you can look at the offerings on Ebay that look exactly the same. I think I remember the ones from 1981 on were a little different. Rather than find out if they would work I found some that were exactly the same.

What year did shoulder belts become universal?

Re: Seatbelts?

I could be all wet on this... but if I remember correctly, federal law required them in cars by the '69 model year and light duty trucks by '77.

God Bless, Terry
