Junkyard Carrier Bearing???
I have been searching for the carrier bearing for our trucks and I have come to the conclusion that I have a bearing out of the JY. The "custom bracket" on the bottom seems to really give it away.

Re: Junkyard Carrier Bearing???
will the bolt holes line up with the holes in the crossmember on your truck? and if so will the shaft be pretty straight? if not you might have to go with the horseshoe style designed for our longbed trucks.

Yep, This one was out of my LWB converted to SWB. In the middle of the rebuild now. I'll take it to the local napa and see if i can find a bearing. I don't mind making a bracket for mounting to make the new on work. If this is the same size, I'm in luck. I see how this one mounts to the top of the loop. http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Ca...6FF_0329213478 But i'm usually not that lucky.

Re: Junkyard Carrier Bearing???
That is an original carrier, some call it the HD or heavy duty carrier bearing. Much better than the flimsy hanger bearing most had. There was just a thread about this the other day with a replacement part number...
Here you go. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=656307

Re: Junkyard Carrier Bearing???
It's a SWB now? Get rid of it and go with a one piece drive shaft.

Re: Junkyard Carrier Bearing???
I just posted about that this week. I replaced mine with a new one. Here is the thread, I show where I got it from as well as the Neapco part #.

Re: Junkyard Carrier Bearing???
Yes, they are factory. But at least at O'reilly auto parts, they have two different parts in their system and not that one. But in my thread I linked above, find the Neapco part #.

Re: Junkyard Carrier Bearing???
that is my advantage for shopping local instead of mailorder I go in and see the parts that they have and I select the one that is right for the job that i'm trying to accomplish

Re: Junkyard Carrier Bearing???
No argument from me. But my point is that they do NOT show the HD carrier bearing as an option in the computer for my truck at the LOCAL parts store for me.
They show two different carrier bearings but neither one looks like the one I have (and the one the original poster showed here). That was the point in me posting that other thread this week so if somebody else had the same issue they could find one. After much LOCAL and internet research, I finally found one and ordered it. Now that the part # is known and a manufacturer, you may be able to order from a local store.

Re: Junkyard Carrier Bearing???
Actually, the bracket on "the bottom" goes on the top and bolts to the crossmember. Here is mine installed in the truck.

Re: Junkyard Carrier Bearing???
Holly MOSES! This form does it again. So much great info. Thank you for all the replies.
I looked into getting a single made $300. If I replace the bearings and UJ's myself it will cost me less. If I ever to decide to go lower in the rear, I'll be ready for it. I will have to have this one shortened, quoted $40 to do that. Plus a balance. I picked up a new carrier at the parts store on my way home, it's the smaller type. I think I can make it work. The "bracket" tabs on mine have been broken off and re welded at some time. Wonder what caused that?

Re: Junkyard Carrier Bearing???
I'm guessing you are talking about a new carrier assembly?

Re: Junkyard Carrier Bearing???
Many, many years ago, I had that "Heavy Duty" bracket & carrier on a '70 GMC 1/2 ton.
The bracket broke at both those places near where it's riveted to the cross member. I couldn't find that style bracket in the junk yards, and never thought about having it welded. I ended up finding the other style bracket and converted to the "hanging donut" type carrier. I wish this website and the wealth of information here was available way back then. |
