Project Update (And carb question)

Took a setback a few weeks ago when the (original) starter solenoid fell apart on me while add new battery cables. Then had issues where the starter wouldn't stop cranking. Turned out the new solenoid was bad. Threw another new one on and problem was resolved. Of course at the same time the ignition switch went to hell so replaced that as well.

Went back to work on the truck today and was hoping to finally get her running. After testing for fuel, I found the fuel pump was bad so replaced that and had gas flowing again.

Then found we had no spark so put in a new condenser and points and now we have spark.

Finally tried to crank it up but nothing. Found that spraying carb cleaner into the carb (or pouring a little gas in it) got it to sputter and die. So at this point I feel the issue is in the carburetor, which brings me to my question....

Should I attempt rebuilding the carb myself? I know enough to be dangerous and would prefer to do this myself so I can use it as a learning experience.

If you guys say I should take a try at it, how do I could about it? I suppose I can order a rebuild kit? Do I have to order anything special or are rebuild kits mostly a one-size-fits-all?

Also, if this could be something other than the carb, I'm open to suggestions.

Started work on the carb today. Figured out the make and model number (it was hidden under crud) and just now ordered a rebuild kit.

Working slowly right now. I removed the top end (or whatever it's called), disassembled it and soaked it in a chem dip. It's now nice and clean and ready for reassembly once the smaller pieces are done soaking in a rust removal dip.

I did figure out why the carb wasn't working. It was as I had expected. The float was stuck to the bottom in a thick accumulation of varnish.

Took me all day, but I was able to tear the whole carb down, clean everything, and put it back together. Will have to do it all again when the rebuild kit arrives, but figured this would be good practice.

Only took a few wrong turns during the assembly.

I do have one thing that looks a bit odd. I took a million pictures but for some reason I missed this piece before taking it apart so not sure if I put it on right. There is a rod that runs down from the choke actuator, down to a cam. It doesn't appear to do anything. I'll get a pic posted as soon as I can and hopefully someone can tell me what's going on here.
