I'm wrapping up my current SWB truck and I have been thinking of my next project.

I want a 4x4 next and I'm considering a 74 Bronco, but I also think it would be cool to build a 4x4 Longhorn with 3/4 ton running gear.

What do think about the 4x4 Longhorn idea? Any pros and cons?

those are the only pros and cons i can see :p IMO I would go with the longhorn. after all you swb needs a brother or sister.

I agree with Landon, forget the Bronco. Not jsut cuz its a Ford, but because any other kind of convertible SUV is cooler than those (Blazer, Jimmy, Scout, Scout II, Jeep) Longhornmail has some pics of 4x4 longhorns on his website I think, if not maybe someone can post them.

This one is modified to be a 4x4 but a good start for someone.

Someone on the board went out and checked it out several months back and stated that the owner was aware that it was a conversion.

Wow. That would be a good start! I wish I had the money now to buy, but I may have to piece one together.

I think that would look cool with a little lift and some 35's.

There is a con...if you plan on taking it off road, the turning radius really sucks.
If you can get past that...I say go for it.

No off roading (at least not planed). I've only seen one longhorn here in town. I'll have to start looking harder.

I don't know about a 4X4 longhorn. I know this is a chevy page but I do like the early broncos. I have always wanted to have a scout or a early 70's jeepster. I love topless trucks and topless... well never mind

there is a guy out here in san jose, ca. that has built a few longhorn 4x4s. i've looked a a couple of them and other than bolts in the spring hangers they look factory. i never understood why chevy/gmc didn't build them.
i also like the early bronco's, i had a 69 that was sweet. even old scouts are cool if you lose the cornbinder anchor, i mean motor, and dump in a small block.
they're all classics, even the "evil oval"

I think the main reason GM never built a 4x4 longhorn is nobody would pay the extra for 4x4 in a truck that was desogned to carry a slide in camper. To tall and heavy to go off road and 4wd was seen as a un-necessary for 99percent of the general public. And the early fords had the solid axle were easy to work on no major problems, After '80 They went to the Independent front end and were a headache. The only other problem with fords are if you have a bad water pump you have to strip the entire front of the engine to change it. JMHO

well i know there is a guy close to where i live that has a scout i think it is a scout 2 i havent gotten to look at it but from a distance and it looks good, my dad looked at it and said that it is daily driver stuff but has rust and could use a frame off.

dwaite72lnghrn, ford actually went to that messed up front end in 67, and kept it untilla couple years ago. The early ones were real bad becouse you had to heat up the arms to get the amber set, and you could only do that 2 or 3 times befor needing to replace them.
One of Ford's 'better' ideas huh?
