Stock wheel alternatives for a 16.5"
Im having trouble finding tires for my 16.5s on my 1979 K30. I've heard 17s off of a newish dodge will fit. I tried bolting on a 16" off of a late 90s chevy and the center hole wasn't big enough to fit onto the hub. I was wondering what kinds of wheels you guys have used on your one tons. I appreciate any and all the suggestions. Post up some pics if you've got em. Thanks a bunch

Re: Stock wheel alternatives for a 16.5"
I'm pretty sure stock 16x6.5" steelies from 80s pickups will fit no problem...

Re: Stock wheel alternatives for a 16.5"
Any hubcap-type 8-lug 16" truck wheel will work, as long as it isn't a newer Ford (about '96-up) Metric/170mm wheel. The Ford wheels from before that change are your best bet. Those are 1" wider than the others at 7" which is only 1/2" wider than your factory 16.5s. Those wheels will have "Accuride" stamped into them

Re: Stock wheel alternatives for a 16.5"
They still make about 10 different tires in 16.5 without going into a full mud tire.
Thanks

Re: Stock wheel alternatives for a 16.5"
Thanks for the replies guys. I was under the impression that a 16" would not fit over the calipers in the front, They're pretty darn big compared to the 3/4 ton. I've only tried to put on the one 16" chevy wheel and like i said the center hole wasn't big enough, and it looked pretty close to the brakes. I'll do some searching and see if i can find a another 16" wheel to try. Anybody used one with success with the bigger front brakes? I'd rather go away from 16.5 tires because it just seems simpler to be able to go down to the local tire store and buy tires when i need them, plus they're pretty expensive to have them order them.

Re: Stock wheel alternatives for a 16.5"
16" could come on all 3/4 tons. 16.5s became an option around 67/68. Heck, you can mount 15" wheels. You only have to grind along the casting seem a little bit for clearance

Re: Stock wheel alternatives for a 16.5"
Nothing changed on a Dana 60 over the years, 16s were standard in the 80s and the K30 came with them. Need to find and 80s 3/4 or 1 ton for 16s. Why not buy new wheels? Or go on craigslist. I picked up a set of 16x10 8 lugs for $200.

Re: Stock wheel alternatives for a 16.5"
None of the 8 stock 3/4 ton 16 in rims would fit over the front hub on my 72 K20 like the OP stated, no problem in the rear.
The guy at the tire shop said they would just file the stamping high spots down a bit and they would go on with no trouble. Anyone know if these are hub centric or lug centric rims? |

Re: Stock wheel alternatives for a 16.5"
Ok thanks guys. I will start looking at 16s also. I just havent found a set yet that would fit over the hubs but good to know they will fit over the brakes. I'd rather have 16s anyway for cheaper tires. The only 16s i did try would have taken way to much "clearancing" out of the center hole of the wheel.

Re: Stock wheel alternatives for a 16.5"
16s were stock on 3/4 and 1 tons in the 80s.
You have something going on, if 16s wouldn't fit over the hub. They are the same as any other big hub 44. If they fit a 60 then should fit a 44. Sure they were GM wheels?

Re: Stock wheel alternatives for a 16.5"
88-up IFS normally won't fit over hubs...

Re: Stock wheel alternatives for a 16.5"
Dont have the measurement of the hubs but they are the early 1st series "big hub" type.
All the rims I have are early to mid 90's manufacture |

Re: Stock wheel alternatives for a 16.5"
16s came on 70s/80s 3/4t as well as 1t (C, K, G & P models). Mid-90s GM wheels (IFS) won't fit. Those are steel but not "Steelies". They are "Styled Steel Wheels". I tried one on a '72 K/20, no go. I just needed to mount them on a truck that was sitting so I could borrow it's wheels for another truck. All 8-lug steelies will fit on a GM, from my experience. Ford has a larger hub, so GM wheels won't fit those. You don't want IFS wheels on a solid axle truck. The IFS wheels are made with more like a FWD offset than a RWD and will be too tucked in. I've seen them on a '79 K20 around town some years ago. I believe even the small hubs have the same diameter lip the wheel fits over. Must have machined the hubs or wheels...or that lip is smaller.

Re: Stock wheel alternatives for a 16.5"
I am running 1996 and 2000 steel rims on my K20 burb. I did have to file a small amount of the raised stamping area like mentioned above to get them to fit the front hubs, no mods needed for the rear hubs (HO52)

Getting harder to find now, I think they are going to discontinue them. They measure just over 32 inches installed on the stock rims. The burb is running its stock suspension which is sagging a bit, hopefully getting a 2.5 TC kit soon. |

Re: Stock wheel alternatives for a 16.5"
I have 1989 d60 up front and have run 2002 aluminum Chevy wheels that were 16" no problem. Bolted right up no filing. Got them on CL right now cuz I went back to my bullet holes that came off a Furd?

Re: Stock wheel alternatives for a 16.5"
I was wrong about the late 8-lug wheels. Looks good. I always see people here saying they tuck in too much. I guess that's just 6-lug. Those have a more obvious inset.

I was just in south San Antonio this afternoon and I swung into a truck salvage yard. Walked all around looking for accuride rims, only found 2 of em so I passed. He wanted 25 bucks a piece

Re: Stock wheel alternatives for a 16.5"
Thanks for the info. Thats more like what im looking for. I'm finding a lot of good sets of wheels off of newer trucks for really cheap on craigslist, I guess everybody is buying 20s or something for their 3/4 and 1 tons I haven't been finding much for older wheels though. Thanks for the info and pics guys.

I have an 87 1 ton 4x4 that's bone stock, the factory wheels are 16 X 6.5". They are the same wheels on the K/20's also.
