Bed Removal - One Man Job without a Cherry Picker - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Like it says, I removed the bed today by myself without any kind of lift. I was watching Car Chasers and they had a huge military truck they had to remove the bed of so they attached 6x6 posts to the bed, let out air in the tires to lower the truck and drove away. In addition to that, I used to work at discount tire during college and we used to be able to move vehicles pretty much anywhere with floor jacks.

So.... that got me to thinking. I took out all the bed bolts (zero bolts were frozen, super lucky), jacked up the back of the truck from the pumpkin and removed the tires. Then I pulled the bed as far back as it would go, put jack stands at the four corners, lowered the jack under the pumpkin so the back drums were almost on the ground, put the truck in neutral and pushed. The whole truck rolled on the jack. I had to reposition some jack stands along the way but all in all, pretty happy I got it off by myself. Once it was on the jack stands I moved them to some weak saw horses that made me nervous so I ended up putting it up in the air. I haven't power cleaned in a while, but I got it up. I will more than likely be getting a cherry picker to put it back on when I get done with the back half, but I am able to get started. I wouldn't recommend for a show truck, but man mine is a shop truck that is okay to beat up the paint. Hope this helps some folks.

While we are on the subject, kinda, I heard you can remove and replace a cab by yourself too if you use a king sized mattress and gently roll it over off the frame on it's side.

No, I haven't tried it LOL. But, necessity is the mother of all invention, true that.

Thanks guys!! I would have taken more pics in the process but honestly I didn't know if it was going to work and it was pretty touch and go there for a bit. If anyone does do this, I would definitely take the rear bumper off. And the straps are for the wifey, she is freaked out it will fall over.

That was a good idea... I have the exact same ones and both have boken on me under much less weight.

I panicked in the middle and the only cardboard I could find was my garage posters- hahahhaha!! The bumper was tricky but I moved the truck as far forward as possible and then lifted the bed corner with one hand and moved the jack stand behind. All in all not to terribly difficult but I took two alieve afterwards for the old back.

I see what appears to be a long, rusty-yellow looking boom extending from the front loader that puts quite a bit of leverage against the tractor. The boom could have slid to the right side of the loader.

IMO, that would account for the lifting of the left rear wheel of the tractor.

it didnt have much in it.that was as short of a boom i could use and keep from beatin up the bed.usualy i have a box blade on the back but i was in a hury to get it out of the way.it all turned out good

Took my bed off today with a contraption l made several years ago- works pretty nice. It has 2 hooks- 1 for with a tailgate , 1 without
