Tempature sensors pre 88 vs 88 and up
When I put the 1972 427 TB into my 93 dually I used the 93 diesel temp sender with an adapter fitting. Even though I installed the adapter and then milled it off flush with the head the temp readings are about 20-30 cooler on the gauge than the motor. This is likely due to the shielding effect of the adapter.
Now with the 402 based 434 going in my 98 k3500 crew I'm wondering if I can't change the plug on the end of the temp sensor wire and run the new 1972 type sensor for the gauge in an effort to get more accurate readings. Thoughts anyone? |

Only thing I can think of is to see what the resistance range is on the different sensors. The gauge gets it's reading by that. So what ever the gauge is set for, is the type of sensor you will need. Long story short, temp sensor is designed for the gauge. Find out what the gauge works on, then you'll be able to match the sender to it.

Painless Wiring makes nice stuff for certain but I am using the stock harness minus a few things. I'm using the stock 5.7 ECM for running the speedometer and gauges, cruise control and alternator. At some point I may go back to a 4L80e so keeping the stock harness saves me $90 for an Optishift harness.
Will check the ohms reading today and go from there. |

With an ohm meter.

The specs in the links in my post above this are out of the emissions section for gasoline engines.
I wanted to see if there is any difference in the specifications for temperature sensors used on diesels vs. gasoline. I looked in a set of 1993 manuals and I did not find any specs listed in the diesel sections. To verify they are the same you could look up the part number and see if gas and diesel sensors are the same part number. I have never found any difference in any of the gasoline engines specifications for the temperature sensor. The same resistance per temperature also is the same for automatic transmission temperature sensors.
